University of Sydney - Speech Pathology

The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Sydney has a strong focus on teaching and research. The Senior Lecturer and Course Director of BAppSc (Speech Pathology) is responsible for the following areas of teaching and service: articulation and phonology, motor speech disorders, evidence based practice in speech pathology, and normal communication development. Research focuses on examining treatment for moderate-severe speech impairments in children. Within this area there are a number of aspects explored including (a) treatments for Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) (also known as dyspraxia), (b) disorders of speech which cause impairments to production of polysyllabic words and longer linguistic units, and (c) the comparison of phonological and articulation treatments to demonstrate relative effectiveness and efficiency.

Why are you participating in the "Augustana in Australia" program?

I am participating in the "Augustana in Australia" program to have a once in a lifetime experience. I chose to do this program because of the internship that comes with it. This is an experience I will be able to talk about for graduate school and years after.

What value do you hope to add back to the internship site?

I do not know my placement yet, but in general I hope to add a positive attitude and helping hand. I hope I can apply the knowledge and use the tools I have gained from my clinical internship here at Augstana to any placement I receive in Australia.

What do you hope to learn on your internship?

I hope to learn more about the field of speech-language pathology, different disabilities and disorders, and intervention approaches. I hope to become more comfortable working with children with a variety of disabilities and disorders.

Where do you plan to travel during your term "down under?"

I have not looked into this yet, but I want to see as much as I can while I am there.

What do you anticipate to be the highlight of your experience "down under?"

The highlight of my experience will be the once in a lifetime opportunity of living in another country.
