Starlight Children's Foundation

Since being formed as an Australian children’s charity in 1988, Starlight has brightened the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children, and their families, throughout Australia. Starlight programs are delivered both in and out of hospital, providing positive distraction to children in their time of need. Starlight relies entirely on the support of the community and the generosity of supporters to exist and therefore runs numerous fundraising events to support their valuable work with sick children.

Why are you participating in the "Augustana in Australia" program?

I've dreamed about going to Australia. I believe having an internship will help expand my job knowledge as well. This is how I chose Australia. I'm looking forward to being in a hands on job, learning things that teachers can't teach me in a classroom. I'm looking to have the experience of a lifetime and create memories that will last me forever.

What value do you hope to add back to the internship site?

Most of the time a lot of business students go on this trip. As an art and psych major, I believe I will get a different experience out of it. I look forward to sharing my story and encouraging others to go, who may have different majors.

What do you hope to learn on your internship?

I'm having a hard time deciding what direction I want to take with my art and psychology degree. I feel like this will help me narrow down what I really want to do with the rest of my life. I think it may even be able to eliminate certain aspects of psychology that I won't want to do anything with. I hope to receive an education of something that cannot be taught inside the classroom. I hope to learn more about my future and myself.

Where do you plan to travel during your term "down under?"

All over the place. I've bought books on Australia and plan on going to many of the different sites listed in the books. I want to go every place I can in the short amount of time that I'll be there.

What do you anticipate to be the highlight of your experience "down under?"

The living experience. I love to travel and learn about new cultures. This is the first time I'll actually have the chance to live in one. I'm looking forward to learning about a new way of life.
