The Inspire foundation was established in 1996 in direct response to Australia's then escalating rates of youth suicide. They combine technology with the direct involvement of young people to deliver innovative and practical online programs that prevent youth suicide and improve young people's mental health and wellbeing. Their mission is to help millions of young people lead happier lives.
Mitch's pre-trip thoughts
Internship: I will be interning at Inspire Foundation as the youth involvement intern. Inspire is an NPO that seeks to help Australian teens that have questions about mental health issues.
Why are you participating in the Augustana in Australia program? I am participating because I want to travel abroad as well as enhance my resume. I have always wanted to go to Australia and this is the perfect opportunity.
What value do you hope to add back to the internship site? I want to be able to apply the knowledge that I have gained so far through my psychology major and help the people that come to me with questions. I want to help educate people about mental health.
What do you hope to learn on your internship? I hope to learn about diagnosing mental health disorders and learn about the problems faces by teens today.
Where do you plan to travel during your term "down under"? I plan on visiting the Great Barrier Reef and New Zealand. I am also looking to go to Fraser Island.
What do you anticipate to be the highlight of your experience "down under"? I anticipate my favorite part to be integrating into the culture, exploring Sydney, and traveling to other cities.
Other comments. This is a once in a lifetime experience and I am very glad I have the opportunity to participate.
