Greg Smith SC MP was elected as the Member for Epping for the Liberal Party in March 2007. He had been Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions. He served nearly 4 years in the Shadow Ministry and was sworn in as Attorney General and Minister for Justice upon the election of the O'Farrell Government. During his career, he was a crown Prosecutor and Deputy Senior Crown Prosecutor for a total of 15 years, conducting criminal trials in the Supreme and District Courts, as well as appearing for the Crown in numerous appeals in the Court of Criminal Appeal and the High Court of Australia; Senior Assistant Commonwealth DPP after working in the Commonwealth Crown Solicitor's Office and as a Solicitor in several city firms.
Louie's pre-trip thoughts
Internship: I am interning at The Welfare Rights Centre, which advising people of their rights and entitlements. They also work in community development, community education and training, law reform, and lobbying. I will be completing a major research project while I am there. I hope to better the lives of the local people there.
Why are you participating in the Augustana in Australia program? I have always wanted to travel "down under." Having the opportunity to experience Australia first hand and put the finishing touches on my major through an internship is the experience of a lifetime.
What value do you hope to add back to the internship site? I hope to bring enthusiasm and energy to my internship site and share an American perspective. Of course, furthering the organization's mission is paramount.
What do you hope to learn on your internship? I have read plenty of books and theories, but I really hope to see how true professionals "do" in my respective field.
Where do you plan to travel during your term "down under"? While down under, I hope to get out frequently. I would love to get to New Zealand or the Great Barrier Reef, in addition to experiencing Sydney in depth!
What do you anticipate to be the highlight of your experience "down under"? Working with professionals within my discipline in an international setting and gain a new perspective on my studies.
