Major: Communication Studies and Disorders
Brighter Futures is a voluntary, targeted program designed for families encountering problems that impact on their ability to care for their children. The program provides families with the necessary support and services to help prevent an escalation of the problems they are facing. The program recognizes that supporting families before problems reach a crisis improves family resilience, promotes health child development, and reduces child abuse and neglect.
Lisa's pre-trip thoughts
Internship: Brighter Futures in communication sciences and disorders as a finance intern. This organization provides services to families at risk for abuse, neglect, and other situations that make it difficult for parents to provide and parent their children.
Why are you participating in the Augustana in Australia program? I am participating in the Augustana in Australia program because I wanted to travel abroad during my years at college. Since I am a CSD major, I was afraid that I would not have the opportunity to travel abroad and meet all of my graduation requirements, but the Australia term offered the opportunity to do both.
What value do you hope to add back to the internship site? I hope to be a good asset to Brighter Futures because of my experience, working with special needs children.
What do you hope to learn on your internship? I hope to learn more about abuse, neglect, and other special cases, as well as how to properly interact with the victims in situations like these.
Where do you plan to travel during your term "down under"? I am undecided.
What do you anticipate to be the highlight of your experience "down under"? ALL OF IT!
