Sydney Observatory

Built in 1858, Sydney Observatory is Australia's oldest observatory and one of the most significant sites in the nation's scientific history.  The Observatory comprises a virtual reality 3-D space theatre, a shop, a lecture theatre, a historic 29cm lens telescope built in 1874, a 42cm computer controlled telescope and hydrogen-alpha solar telescope, beautiful gardens and the beanbag planetarium.  Throughout the year the observatory holds, nightly tours, continuous and rotating exhibitions as well as educational or special events and functions.

Kelly's pre-trip thoughts

Internship:  Sydney Observatory in business and event planning.

Why are you participating in the Augustana in Australia program?  I want to have the chance to experience an internship in my field of study in a different country.  I think it will be an eye-opening experience and I hope to gain new relationships with my co-workers and other Australians, and the Augustana interns.

What value do you hope to add back to the internship site?  I hope to represent a good image of Americans and Augustana while at the internship.  I hope to aid the company I am with by giving new ideas, building on my past experience.

What do you hope to learn on your internship?  I hope to learn how to work well with people of a different culture and get a sense of how I feel about working within a corporation.

Where do you plan to travel during your term "down under"?  Cairns, Great Barrier Reef, New Zealand

What do you anticipate to be the highlight of your experience "down under"?  I think spring break will be the highlight-a big ending to a great 8 weeks.  I don't know where I will be going yet...
