Keena's pre-trip thoughts

Internship:   Oasis Youth Center (Salvation Army).  It gives homeless teens access to education, training, jobs, counseling and drug/alcohol programs.

Why are you participating in the Augustana in Australia program?  I am participating because I want hands-on clinical experience in the social services/psychology field.  I am hoping this experience will confirm for me to pursue my goal of working in a clinical setting.

What value do you hope to add back to the internship site?  I have had experience working with young women who have dealt with domestic violence/sexual assault and I have learned how to communicate with people who have experienced traumatic life events.  I have developed a deep respect for people who work in this field and the amount of dedication it takes to make a difference in others' lives is something I have learned to value and that I can add to the internship.

What do you hope to learn on your internship?   Learn how to meet deadlines and not procrastinate with my work.  How to handle stressful situations in a clinical setting.  How to balance this type of work with other parts of my life.  Different strategies and ways of handling this type of work vs. how this is conducted in the United States.

Where do you plan to travel during your term "down under"?   First, I plan on exploring all that I can of Sydney and visit nearby cities as well.  For spring break I plan on traveling to New Zealand or even the Great Barrier Reef.

What do you anticipate to be the highlight of your experience "down under"?   Adapting to a new culture in general and seeing how another part of the world operates.  Being able to figure out transportation and take care of myself will give me the confidence that I can be successful wherever life takes me.
