Notes from the faculty

From Pamela Druger:

The profession of accounting is getting more complex. Sarbanes-Oxley demands more testing of Internal Controls. International Accounting Standards demand that we take a look at alternative methods of accounting for many transactions. This is not a profession for the weak of heart or mind.

Augustana students have the knowledge, skills and abilities to be able to handle the challenges. It is a great time to be an accounting major at the college. For the first time in over a decade, there are over 60 majors and minors declared from the sophomore and junior classes.

john delaney

From John Delaney:

The timing of our first newsletter could not be better. Next year, in conjunction with my sabbatical leave, I will be adventuring out to visit current and potential employers of our students. We have made some significant changes to the accounting curriculum to keep us up-to-date with best practices and to allow flexibility for accounting internships. We'd like to share this news with our employer network.

That's where you, the Augie Accounting Alumni, come in. If you are involved with recruiting at your firm (or know who is), please pass on any contact information that you feel might benefit our "public relations" tour. In particular, I plan on spending a considerable amount of time in the Chicago area next fall. Thanks in advance for helping us to continue to expand the Viking network!

From Janene Finley:

This year, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program partnered with the Center for Economic Progress to prepare tax returns for low-income families in the Quad Cities. The program moved to the Martin Luther King Center in Rock Island.

Forty-six students volunteered and prepared 201 tax returns during three weeks in the winter term. The partnerships will continue in the new year and we hope to expand the time period, to increase the number of volunteers, and continue the success of the VITA program.

Contact me at if you would like to volunteer for next year's program. Alumni are welcome.

rob faulkner

From Rob Faulkner:

Though my association with students at Augie has been only recent, as Professor Emeritus of Accounting, I am so impressed with the students in the department. Their abilities, desire to learn, and dedication to succeed has been my impetus to "unretire" from the classroom.

I am honored to be a member of the Augustana Department of Accounting.
