Beth Oakdale '01
Hello, my name is Beth Oakdale and I am a graduate from the prestigious class of 2001. To those of you interested in Asian Studies, the Japanese language, or experiencing other cultures, I would like to tell you about my current situation. I am living in Nishinomiya-shi, Hyogo-ken in Japan and loving it. I am teaching English as a second language at two high schools in my city. I am a member of the Japan Exchange and Teaching program more commonly known as the JET program. This program provides an unbelievable opportunity for students right out of college. If I had to pick three personality traits that are important for this job they would be: open-minded, accepting, and easygoing. A JET's priority should be teaching English and sharing their culture with others, but there are plenty of opportunities to do other things. In November, I traveled to South Korea and I plan to visit the Philippines next May with Habitat for Humanity. I have also had a chance to travel around the beautiful country in which I live. Spending time with teachers and students at my schools is one of my highlights. I have also met great friends from other cultures; the JET program invites people from 39 different countries. This truly is a wonderful experience. During my college years, I was lucky to have the chance to study abroad and learn from many professors in the Japanese/Asian Studies department. It was sophomore year after returning from East Asian term that I decided to apply for the JET program. I have absolutely no regrets. I look forward to the 7 months that I have ahead of me. Please email me if you have questions or would like to know more about my job. Ganbatte (good luck)! Beth Oakdale bethsan13@aol.com |
