Medical Service Learning in Nicaragua (annual)

Get hands-on experience in your pre-health field and help communities across Nicaragua get medical care.

JETS! (Joining in Education Through Service) will again travel  to Nicaragua in July in 2013.   During the two weeks in Nicaragua, students will assist medical personnel at free health clinics.  The group will work with the NGO Praxis, whose main purpose is to offer healthcare students and professionals a truly international experience that will expand their understanding of medicine and life outside of the United States. Praxis is prepared to set up temporary medical clinics to diagnose and provide medicines for basic, non-chronic illnesses.  They refer patients to hospitals when a patient's condition is beyond the scope of what can be provided on-site.   Students will be accompanied by Dr. Dara Wegman-Geedey, Department of Biology.

Courses:  This program requires that all participants complete a 2-credit Biology course during the Spring Trimester.  Additionally, all Nicaragua Program participants are expected to be active members of the ACHOO and JETS student organizations in the year prior to departure.

Costs: The estimated 2014 program fee is $3,400.  This fee includes airfare, ground transportation, housing, group meals, health insurance and program support staff.  The fee does not include discretionary spending.

Calendar:  The JETS Nicaragua Medical Service Learning Program typically runs during 2 of the first 3 weeks of July.  Exact dates will be available later this year.
