Exchange Program at the U. of Botswana
Study in southern Africa on an Augustana exchange with the University of Botswana--Gaborone
APPLICATIONS FOR FALL 2015 ARE DUE JANUARY 17TH.
Augustana College offers you the opportunity to study at one of Africa's premiere universities. Through a year-long or semester-length exchange program you can study at the University of Botswana, in Gaborone, the nation's capital. This program is open to any major, and highly recommended for students in Africana Studies.
All coursework, except language study, is conducted in English. Students who opt for a one-semester program will be off campus for an entire term as well as half of our Winter trimester, but may elect to take courses on campus in Rock Island for the other half of the Winter Term.
ELIGIBILITY: This program is open to all students in their sophomore year or later with a GPA of 2.50. Students should consult with their academic advisors before application to ensure that the program will fit with their other academic goals. Courses must be pre-approved before the student leaves for Sweden.
COURSES: The expansive catalog of the University of Botswana is at your disposal, however not all programs will provide coursework for exchange students due to expectations for prerequisites. Students must work with the International Office of the U of B as well as with appropriate Augustana academic departments to preapprove appropriate courses. All courses must be pre-approved and it is up to each Augustana department to determine the course equivalency. Learning perspectives will be granted based upon the Augustana course equivalencies.
Students on this, or any exchange, must receive a grade of C or higher in all coursework in order for exchange courses to be accepted as Augustana credit.
CALENDAR: The University of Botswana operates on a semester system, so Augustana stduents should expect to be in Botswana for the equivalent of either 1) All of Fall Term and the December portion of Winter Term, or 2) The Jan-Feb portion of Winter Term and all of Spring Term. The University of Botswana's semesters run from early August through mid-December and from mid-January through May. Students who participate in the semester program should expect to take 12-15 credits during the program and to enroll in 3-6 credits of coursework in either the December or Jan-Feb 5-week module format at Augustana, allowing them to complete equivalent credits to two trimesters at Augustana (a total of 6 courses or 18 credits.)
COST: Students will pay standard Augustana tuition, room, board and fees for the time they are in Botswana. All financial aid is transferable and this program is Augie Choice eligible for students who qualify. The University of Botswana will provide housing and a meal plan for exchange students. All travel costs are the responsibility of the student.
Not included in program fees are: Transportation costs to/from and in Botswana, health insurance (international coverage is available either through Augustana or through purchase of an ISIC international student ID card), discretionary spending (including side travel during semester breaks and meals bought outside of the campus meal plan.)

Why an exchange program might be right for you?
Are you an independent person, willing to challenge yourself in a new educational environment? Do you want intensive language study, or perhaps you want to really get to know a new part of the world? Do you want an authentic experience in an international university? Whether for a term, a semester or a year, exchange programs are perfect for students who want to experience what life and what college is like around the world. An exchange lets you go deeper into the host culture than you will if you travel with a large group of Augie students, and it gives you the ability to take classes with native students.Add to this the fact that because you pay Augie tuition, exchange program courses are not transfer credits, and can count towards your graduation requirements.
Also, in many cases exchange programs represent the least expensive programs available, since you are paying Augustana tuition, room or room & board, rather than paying both for tuition and for program costs of an Augie group program.
It takes an adventurous, self-confident and motivated student to truly get the most out of an exchange program, but if you are excited by the idea of living, studying and experiencing another culture without the "Augie bubble", exchanges might be just what you are looking for.
Augustana students are eligible to use Augie Choice to help fund international exchange programs.
