Exchange Program at the U. of Botswana
Spend a semester in southern Africa, studying in English and in your major.
Applications for Spring 2016 Semester will be accepted through August 2015.
Augustana College offers you the opportunity to study at one of Africa's premiere universities. Through a year-long or semester-length exchange program you can study at the University of Botswana, in Gaborone, the nation's capital. This program is open to any major, and highly recommended for students in Africana Studies.
All coursework, except language study, is conducted in English. Students who opt for a one-semester program will be off campus for an entire term as well as half of our Winter trimester, but may elect to take courses on campus in Rock Island for the other half of the Winter Term.
ELIGIBILITY: This program is open to all students in their sophomore year or later with a GPA of 2.50. Students should consult with their academic advisors before application to ensure that the program will fit with their other academic goals.
ACADEMICS: The expansive catalog of the University of Botswana is at your disposal, however not all programs will provide coursework for exchange students due to expectations for prerequisites. Students must work with the International Office of the U. of Botswana as well as with appropriate Augustana academic departments to preapprove appropriate courses. It is up to each Augustana department to determine course equivalency and to accept transfer courses. Learning perspectives will be granted based upon the Augustana course equivalencies.
Students on this, or any exchange, must receive a grade of C or higher in all coursework in order for exchange courses to be accepted as Augustana credit.
CALENDAR: The University of Botswana operates on a semester system, so Augustana stduents should expect to be in Botswana for the equivalent of either 1) All of Fall Term and the December portion of Winter Term, or 2) The Jan-Feb portion of Winter Term and all of Spring Term. The University of Botswana's semesters run from early August through mid-December and from mid-January through May. Students who participate in the semester program should expect to take 12-15 credits during the program and to enroll in 3-6 credits of coursework in either the December or Jan-Feb 5-week module format at Augustana, allowing them to complete equivalent credits to two trimesters at Augustana (a total of 6 courses or 18 credits.)
Cost: Students will pay standard Augustana tuition, room, board and fees for the time they are in Botswana. The cost is therefore equivalent to tuition, room & board on campus for the same amount of time (1.5 trimesters)
Cost includes: The payments to Augustana cover the cost of tuition, housing on campus in Botswana and a food stipend provided to all international studetns at the university in Botswana.
Cost does not include: Airfare, ground transportation, health insurance or discretionary spending while in Botswana. Cost also does not include room & board charges for the half of Winter Term when a student will be back at Augustana. For health insurance we recommend that students consider purchase of an ISIC Explorer ID Card, an international student ID card which comes with a solid international health care plan.
Financial Aid: All financial aid is transferable as if the student were attending Augustana in Rock Island. Additionally, this program is Augie Choice and IOP Grant eligible for students who qualify. The $1,000 IOP Grant is competitive and limited in number.
Augie Choice: This program is Augie Choice eligible for any student who has completed either 60 credits or 6 trimesters at Augustana College prior to departure. Transfer students are eligible after completion of 30 credits or 3 trimesters at Augustana.

Why an exchange program might be right for you?
Are you an independent person, willing to challenge yourself in a new educational environment? Do you want intensive language study, or perhaps you want to really get to know a new part of the world? Do you want an authentic experience in an international university? Whether for a term, a semester or a year, exchange programs are perfect for students who want to experience what life and what college is like around the world. An exchange lets you go deeper into the host culture than you will if you travel with a large group of Augie students, and it gives you the ability to take classes with native students.Add to this the fact that because you pay Augie tuition, exchange program courses are not transfer credits, and can count towards your graduation requirements.
Also, in many cases exchange programs represent the least expensive programs available, since you are paying Augustana tuition, room or room & board, rather than paying both for tuition and for program costs of an Augie group program.
It takes an adventurous, self-confident and motivated student to truly get the most out of an exchange program, but if you are excited by the idea of living, studying and experiencing another culture without the "Augie bubble", exchanges might be just what you are looking for.
