Dohrn Transfer Company:
Located at the closed Case plant on the west side of Rock Island, the Dohrn Transfer Company is a thriving transport company with hubs around the Midwest, and earnings in the area of $30,000,000 in 1999. The national headquarters are at the site of the abandoned Case plant, and in our interviews with Mary Staver, Human Resource Manager at Dohrn, we learned that there are plans to demolish the asbestos ridden high rise. This high rise, once part of the Case Manufacturing Works, is now abandoned, and would be too costly to renovate. Dohrn had for a time looked at the possibility of leasing it out for storage, but has since abandoned the idea. The land on which Dohrn is located is also thought to be polluted from the Case era, though not much is known about that with most of the land now covered in asphalt. When we commented about the possible contamination, Ms. Staver did not seem to know much about it. Much of the land was either cemented or blacktopped over, leaving potentially contaminated ground to be covered before further cleanup.
