Route 6 crosses two Skunk Rivers east of Des Moines, the South and North Skunk. To bring zoological symmetry to central Iowa, the highway crosses two Raccoon Rivers west of Des Moines, the North and South Raccoon. The iron bridge across the South Skunk between Colfax and Newton is shown in this 1997 photo. Alas, within two years the old bridge had been replaced, a fate shared by many interesting old bridges on Route 6.
