Augustana French Play
Spring of 2008

L’Ecole des Femmes (The School for Wives) is a comedy of manners, written by Molière in the early 17th Century. It reflects and comments on contemporary standards for women, satirizing extreme versions of the rules which limit women’s behavior. The main character, Arnolphe, is an example of what is ridiculous about the double standards for men and women, as well as the unbalanced expectations that go with them. This play actually sparked a controversy about the messages Molière conveyed in the work, which seemed to encourage infidelity and the subversion of traditional roles. Whatever the case may be regarding his moral purpose, Molière’s knack for comedy is as strong as ever!

The play is entirely student-run, and it will be performed in French with English subtitles. Admission for students/faculty from Augustana is free, though we suggest a .50 cents donation to go towards next year’s play. Admission for all non-Augustana affiliates is $5. If you have any further questions, please e-mail April-Ladenberger@augustana.edu, and enjoy the show!
