Naeseth Writing Awards
------
The English Department offers awards in honor of the late Henriette C.K. Naeseth,
a former teacher, scholar, and department chair. Several awards in amounts up to
$1,000 each are given every year to entering students, typically first-year
students, who show exceptional promise as writers. Naeseth Awards are renewable
annually for students who furnish evidence of impressive progress as writers at
Augustana.
To apply, send three to five pieces (6-10 pages total) of your original writing
(essays, fiction, poetry) including at least one expository essay, along with a
completed form. All materials must be postmarked by February 10. Winning applicants can expect to be notified by March 10.

accomplishments as a writer.

Saga Awards
-------
Students who write for Saga, Augustana's student-run and edited literary
magazine, are eligible for awards in several categories:
Barbara-Miller Anderson Award (for best piece of writing submitted to Saga) Ann
Sherrick Award in Children's Literature Poetry Awards (first ,second, and third
place) Prose Awards (first, second, and third place) Art Awards (first ,second,
and third place) Chief's Choice Awards (funded and chosen by the
editors-in-chief)
Several of the categories have substantial cash awards. The winners for all
categories except the Chief's Choice Awards are chosen by off-campus judges.

Award for First-Year Writing
------
To encourage excellence in student writing, the Department of English offers an
award to students whose work represents the year's best in the first-year
composition class, English 101, College Writing.
The department awards five $50 cash prizes for the best work in five categories:
Narrative/personal essay
Persuasive/argumentative essay
Research Paper
Most authentically revised and improved narrative/personal essay
Most authentically revised and improved persuasive/argumentative essay
Students can either nominate their own work or be nominated by their teachers.
Announcement of the First-Year Writing Awards are made late in the spring term.
