Jon Hurty and Michael Zemek organized and carried out the first Augustana High School Chamber Ensemble Festival this past weekend. The festival brought 180 talented high school singers to campus. Eight high school chamber choirs from Illinois, Iowa, Indiana and Wisconsin attended for a day and half of rehearsals, workshops, clinics and performances. The final concert of the festival, held in Wallenberg Hall on Monday evening, featured performances by the individual high school choirs and four mass-choir selections that were learned in the festival rehearsals by all the singers. On Sunday evening, the Augustana Choir, Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble and Augustana Chamber Singers presented a mini concert for the visiting students.


Tom Robin Harris performed a concert on October 30 th at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bloomington, IL for a dedication of a new Berghaus Pipe Organ. He will also play at St. John's Lutheran Church in Mendota on Sunday, November 6th and then at Iowa Weslyan in February.


Marsha Smith, along with Costas Spirou at National-Louis University in Chicago and Carol Miller at University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse will be co-editors of the soon-to-be joint publication of the WSA and the ISA entitled: Sociological Imagination. 

The Sociological Imagination publishes articles and note-length manuscripts on issues pertaining to all areas of sociological research, teaching, and practice. We also encourage submission of review essays on theoretical, methodological, and substantive topics, as well as reviews of books and films that are of interest to sociologists. (taken from the website:

Marsha also had a short article entitled "Is The Pearl River Delta Growing Too Fast" that was recently published in the on-line journal titled: International Policy Review and is available at the following website:   and then click on the link entitled: "Is China Growing Too Fast."


The Sociology department recently took 5 students to the Illinois Sociological Association /Wisconsin Sociological Association and Wisconsin Political Science Association joint meeting Oct. 13-14 at Alverno College in Milwaukee, WI.  Marsha Smith organized a session entitled: "Undergraduates Presenting Sociological Research: Case Studies from a Capstone Seminar" where Matt Hofer and Stephanie Phillips presented their research. Also Jennifer Newby's paper entitled "Credit Card Use Among College Students,"  supervised by Marsha Smith won second prize in the ISA Student Paper Competition.


Vicki Sommer will be the incoming President and Warren Fincher will be the incoming secretary of the Illinois Sociological Assocation.  Next Oct. 5th and 6th, the ISA annual meeting will be hosted by Augustana College.
