In 1995 Tim Robbins directed the film Dead Man Walking, featuring performances by Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. The film was based on the book by Sister Helen Prejean, a Jesuit nun who was writing about her experience as a spiritual adviser to a death row inmate. The film was critically acclaimed and sparked renewed discussion and debate on the ethical implications of capital punishment. Robbins wrote this stage version in 2002 and granted exclusive performance rights to high schools and colleges to provide on-campus discussion of the death penalty. Our production will be part of the National Dead Man Walkng School Theatre Project, and as such it will involve additional departments on campus in an interdisciplinary exploration of one of our most important moral issues of the day. Faculty panel discussion following performance.
