The Classics Department of Augustana College

Greek: It's Not Just Any Old Language

Greek 101-102-103. 3+3+3 credits.

Goal and scope: The first year of ancient Greek brings the ability to read most classical and koinê prose with the use of a lexicon. This also satisfies the Augustana graduation requirement in foreign language.

Textbook: Chosen for its graceful, witty, and intelligent attention to the mind and ambiance of Greece as well as to the language.

Grading: Based on weekly quizzes, weekly homework ("labs"), occasional big tests (e.g., a mid-term, a final), and daily preparation.

Pace: The instructor expects the same level of effort and time as in any other language class--no more, no less.

Instructor: Kirsten Day

Alphabet? If we can learn one alphabet, we can learn two. It's fun to see how--and how quickly--one's brain manages this. After one week, Greek letters seem almost normal for Greek words. After three weeks, a Greek word written in English letters seems weird.
