A chapter of Eta Sigma Phi must be won and organized by students. Augustana students applied for a chapter in 1984 and immediately won a charter for a new chapter, Epsilon Sigma. The policy of the founding group was that an invitation to membership would be extended only to those who completed at least the fifth term of Greek or Latin and whose study of Classics showed a high level of competence and involvement.
Since then the Augustana chapter has recognized new inductees at an annual spring brunch. New members receive, besides the honor of a national society, a calligraphed certificate, and a certain amount of waffle-and-syrup-splattered applause at the brunch.
The activities of our chapter are, in keeping with the spirit of student direction, as varied as the imaginations and energies of the officers. One constant has been the sponsorship (with funding from the H. S. B. Johnson Endowment for Classics) of an annual visit and public lecture by a professional archaeologist.
