The curriculum for a chemistry major is based on the belief that a properly trained chemist needs a solid command of the factual, theoretical, and experimental aspects of the various areas of chemistry. This includes an understanding of how chemistry relates to other sciences such as physics, biology, geology, and the environmental and material sciences.

The Chemistry major at Augustana includes courses in General, Inorganic, Analytical, Organic, Physical, Instrumental, and Biochemistry. Supporting courses in mathematics and physics are also required for the chemistry major. Chemistry majors certified by the American Chemical Society are also required to do student research starting at the end of their junior year and continuing through their senior year. Students then describe and discuss the results of their research project in a paper completed in a senior research seminar at the end of the senior year.

Additional courses are offered in advanced Physical, advanced Inorganic, and Environmental chemistry. The Chemistry Department is located in the state-of-the art Science Building that opened in September, 1998.

The new Biochemistry major was approved this fall and includes the following courses, the basic chemistry courses of General, Organic, Analytical, Biochemistry and Physical Chemistry as well as 12 biology credits.  For further information go to Dr. Pamela Trotter's Web page.  (See the faculty page on this site for the address.)
