Privacy Policy

Augustana College adheres firmly to federal law, specifically the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA.)

The College and its representatives (faculty, staff, administration, academic advisors) are not allowed to release academic record information to anyone, at any time, without the prior written consent of the student.  We recommend that even with this written permission advisors refrain from discussing grades with anyone other than the student and the following College personnel: instructor of the course, Office of Academic Affairs, Office of the Registrar, and Office of the Dean of Students.

Be particularly careful when discussing a student's record over the phone or via email. It is very difficult to know for certain the identity of the person on the other end of the line. In addition, confidential information may be overheard and email communications could be forwarded to the wrong individual.

In many cases, students have asked explicitly that some of their information not be shared. If you ever have a question about what student information can be shared, we encourage you to ask first. Contact Dean Evelyn Campbell (x7533) or the Office of the Registrar (x7277.)

It is always a best practice to have the student try to be in direct communication with the parent. However, sometimes this becomes impossible and parents can become insistent. If this is the case, please remind the individual to whom you are speaking of the FERPA guidelines and refer them to Evelyn Campbell in the Dean of Students Office (x7533.)
