Load and Enrollment Policies
First Year Course Load
1. All first year students have a first year general education sequence. Most students will take LSFY 101 in the fall, LSFY 102 in the winter, and LSFY 103 in the spring. Others will be enrolled in one of two Honors sequences (Foundations for Logos). The pink information sheet in their advising folder will reflect which program they are in. Note: students CANNOT switch back and forth between Liberal Studies track and either of the Honors tracks.
The first-year portion (LSFY, HONR) of the Augustana General Education Studies (AGES) program intends to introduce students to skills that are necessary in order to interact successfully with academic discourse and that will serve as the foundation for the rest of their liberal arts education. Since the skills developed in these courses emerge from themes of general education and the liberal arts more broadly, the courses are not intended to offer the disciplinary focus found in major- and minor-oriented courses. It is for this reason, then, that coursework in LSFY and HONR courses count toward a student's general studies requirements rather than the academic major or minor program of study.
2. In general, First-Year students should enroll in no more than 10 credits for the fall term. Depending on a student's intended major and academic preparation, s/he may choose to enroll in four courses during the Winter or Spring course. When you advise students regarding enrolling in a fourth course, consider the following:
• The academic preparation and ability of the student.
• Participation in special programs and activities.
• Students who play a competitive sport should be cautioned about enrolling in four courses the term in which their sport is most involved in competition.
• Students involved in theatrical productions should not enroll in four courses the term their play is scheduled for performance.
• Members of the choir and bands should not take four courses in a term during which they will travel extensively.
• A student's four-course term should not be comprised of courses with which the student has difficulty or in which the student has little interest.
Full-Time Enrollment
1. A full-time load is 8 credits or more. A student will typically enroll in 9 to 12 credit per term, but no more than 33 credits per year.
2. Eight credits are the minimum full-time load. Financial aid and NCAA eligibility may be jeopardized by enrolling in or dropping to less than 8 credits. Be sure to advise students who seek to drop a course of these implications and direct them to the Financial Aid office and/or the Athletic Department for further clarification.
Tuition and Overload Charges
1. Full-time Tuition for the three-term academic year covers the cost of enrollment in 33 credits of instruction with at least 8 credits per term. Courses dropped after the midpoint of a term (if they carry a "W" grade) will be included in the determination of credit load.
For students enrolled for only 1 or 2 terms, full time tuition will cover an average of 11 credits per term. (For example, a student who leaves the college after fall term will be charged an overload fee for any credits beyond 11; a student leaves the college after 2 terms will be charged an overload fee for any credits beyond 22.)
2. Overload Charges will be assessed when the number of credits enrolled in exceeds the number covered by full-time tuition. Overload charges are assessed during the spring term for the academic year, or at the time the student graduates. Overload charges for 2006-2007 are $1100 per credit hour.
• If a student enrolls full-time for just one term in an academic year, the per-credit overload charge will be assessed for more than 11 credits of instruction.
• If a student enrolls full-time for two terms in an academic year, the per-credit overload charge will be assessed for more than 22 credits of instruction, and average of 11 per term. Note that enrollment in 13+9 credits, for example, in two terms, will not result in an overload charge.
• If a student enrolls full-time for three terms of an academic year, the overload charge will be assessed for more than 33 credits of instruction. Note that enrollment in 13+8+12 credits, for example, will not result in an overload charge.
Please note:
• Courses dropped after the midpoint of a term (with a "W") are included in the determination of overload charges.
• Applied music credits for which a fee is paid are not included in the determination of overload charges. They are counted, however, full time status and required credits for graduation.
• All music ensembles are 2/3 credits each, but may be taken for no credit.
