This Week's Message

Several decades ago, the number of students who transferred to Augustana was more than double what it is today. With an overall enrollment several hundred students fewer than today, it's pretty clear that transfer students used to make up a much larger proportion of our student population than it does now. A few years ago we began to place more emphasis on bringing the number of transfer students up to prior levels, but without much luck. So after several years of discussing our institutional intentions and the obstacles that might be holding us back from reaching those goals, The IR office held a series of focus groups to ask transfer students about their experiences during three phases of transitioning to Augustana:

Our discussions with these students were often enlightening, sometimes maddening, and thoroughly interesting. We found that although there are a lot of suppositions about transfer students among faculty, staff, and other students, the overarching narrative about transfer students and their needs was often oversimplified and sometimes just plain wrong.

At this week's Friday Conversation Kimberly Dyer and I will present the findings from these focus groups and host a conversation about their implications. We'd love to hear your reactions to these findings and your suggestions for ways that we might improve the way that we help transfer students transition to Augustana.
