Faculty News

Todd Cleveland (History) had an article entitled "Seguindo a bola: Jogadores africanos de futebol, estratégias de mão de obra e emigração através do império colonial português, 1949-1975," (Following the Ball: African Soccer Players, Labor Strategies, and Emigration across the Portuguese Colonial Empire, 1949-75) appear in the most recent issue of Cadernos de Estudos Africanos (Portugal).  In this same issue, he also contributed a review of the book Esporte e Lazer na África : Novos Olhares (2013).

Kirsten Day's (Classics) article "Representing Olympias: The Politics of Gender in Cinematic Treatments of Alexander the Great" was published in Konstantinos P. Nikoloutsos' Ancient Greek Women in Film, which recently appeared as part of Oxford UP's Classical Presences series.

Adam Kaul (Sociology, Anthropology and Social Welfare) recently attended the American Anthropological Association meetings in Chicago where he co-organized a session with Jonathan Skinner (University of Roehampton) entitled Leisure and Death: Lively Encounters with Risk, Death, and Dying. The theme was based on the paper that Adam presented as part of the session, "That Awful Margin: Tourism and Suicide at the Cliffs of Moher".  James Fernandez was the discussant for the session.  It was also exciting to have four Augustana anthropology majors attend the conference (Madison Neece, Elizabeth Mayer, Sarah Berndt, and Chelsea Bankes).  Adam was able to introduce them to his former Ph.D. advisor (Tamara Kohn, University of Melbourne), and several other anthropologists whose work they had read in various classes.

Peter Kivisto (Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Welfare) has just published "(Mis)Reading Muslims and Multiculturalism," which appears in Social Inclusion, 2013, vol. 1, no. 2,  pp 126-135.

Peter was also a keynote speaker at the Mcgen Research Network Conference on Minority Rights held at the University of Turku on November 25.  His talk was titled "Religious Rights and Immigrants in Western Europe and North America."

Lisa Seidlitz (German) gave a paper at the conference of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in November. As part of a panel entitled "New Curricular Directions in Undergraduate College German Programs," she described the new curriculum in German and Scandinavian and the rationale for the changes being made.
