Faculty News

Peter KivistoPeter Kivisto (Sociology, Anthropology and Social Welfare) was awarded an honorary doctorate by the humanities faculty of the University of Turku (Finland) on May 31.  In the photo, he and Susan are standing outside of the Turku Concert Hall between the ceremony and the procession to the cathedral. Not used to wearing a sword, he thought he ought to look serious.

In early June, Peter presented three lectures on religion and the public sphere at a workshop held on the Greek island of Lesbos. The workshop was sponsored by NOREL, a research team of scholars conducting a major research project on religion in the Nordic countries since the middle of the past century.

In August, Peter presented a paper at the American Sociological Association annual meeting, the second of a series of papers he is planning with Vanja La Vecchia-Mikkola on Iraqi refugees in Helsinki and Rome.

Chris Strunk (Geography) had an article accepted for publication next year (co-written with Helga Leitner, UCLA): "Spaces of Immigrant Advocacy and Liberal Democratic Citizenship" in the Annals of the Association of American Geographers, Special Issue, The Geography of Migration, 104 (2).
