Carl Wilhelm Stenhammar, chairman of the Rotary Foundation, will appear at a noon public luncheon program in support of Rotary International's "End Polio Now" effort to eradicate polio worldwide. Stenhammar, former president of Rotary International, is the grandson of the Swedish composer Wilhelm Stenhammar, whose works have often been sung by the Augustana Choir.

Learn about the IFDS seminars from faculty who have participated in recent programs all over the world. These two-week summer seminars span the disciplines and the globe, with 18 different program sites being offered this year. International and Off-Campus Programs offers funding of up to $3,000 to assist faculty who wish to participate. At the meeting we will hear from several faculty who have participated in past programs, present how to apply with CIEE for both IOP funds and Ping Grants from the CIEE.

The Augustana College Scandinavian Department and American Scandinavian Association at Augustana invite the Quad Cities community to a traditional Swedish Julsmörgåsbord (Christmas buffet). After the buffet, Swedish language students will observe the festival of Sankta Lucia at 7:00 PM in Wallenberg Hall, Denkmann Building. The public is welcome. This year's Lucia is Rachel Ostberg, a senior majoring in Scandinavian studies and English. the jultomte will be Anna Cronin, who is also a senior. Anna is majoring in Scandinavian studies and psychology. At the evening's celebration of Swedish heritage, the ASA will serve cider, coffee, and homemade cookies in the Denkmann lobby. Ticket price: Buffet is $10.95 adults, $5.25 children; Sankta Lucia festival is free.

Augustana employees and their families gather around a traditional Swedish smörgåsbord to celebrate our community (and eat too much potato sausage and herring). Students serenade the crowd, and after dinner, children are invited upstairs for an interactive telling of the Christmas story, and (possibly) a visit by the American version of the Jultomte.

FACULTY RESEARCH GRANT
The Faculty Research Committee seeks proposals for Faculty Research Awards in support of creative and scholarly work. Fundable items include (but are not limited to) student salaries, special equipment, supplies, journal page costs, work in major archives, and additional study. Any faculty member with academic rank, including full-time, joint-appointment, adjunct or part-time faculty, is eligible to apply. Proposals are due January 17, 2011. This display includes materials printed during the period of the Protestant Reformation that began in 1517 with Martin Luther's posting of the 95 Theses, and ended over a century later with Protestantism as an established part of European life. Included are examples of early persuasive pamphlets, the Augusburg Confesion (from which Augustana College derives its name), and Reformation bindings. These materials will be on display on the second floor of the library until the end of Winter Term.

Special Collections
Celebrations and traditions surrounding the Christmas season at Augustana have proven to be popular and long lasting. Many of Augustana's traditions are directly influenced by Augustana's Swedish heritage, such as the Sankta Lucia Festival, Tomtegubben, and the Smörġasbord, while others, such as the Handel Oratorio society, are simply a genuine expression of the joyous atmosphere of the holiday season. This exhibit aims to trace the formation and practice of five of Augustana's most popular Christmas traditions. Curated by Leslie Nellis '11, this exhibit will be on display in Special Collections until mid-January.
MIDWEST FACULTY SEMINAR
"Happiness"

The United States' Declaration of Independence asserts that all men are "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." We all seem to understand the sentiment behind this statement, and yet any attempt to specify what exactly is meant by "happiness" reveals an inadequacy inherent to the description of such an intensely personal emotion. Such efforts have, nonetheless, been a primary concern of philosophical, religious, psychological and even, as the above example illustrates, of legal thought at least since classical Greece. This seminar will take a variety of approaches from across the academic spectrum to create a conversation that engages these and other related issues. How can scientific and quantitative methods help us to understand human happiness better? How do understandings and expectations of happiness differ across cultures? What role do governments have in defining, or even providing for, the happiness of citizens? How have conceptions of happiness changed over time?
Presidential Research Fellowship Award
Eligibility: All tenure-track and tenured faculty
Deadline: December 15
Notification: January 15; funding disbursed July and August
Description
Presidential Research Fellowships are intended to support faculty research, scholarship and artistic work at Augustana. The fellowships will pay up to $4,000 for a faculty research project to be undertaken in the summer. Up to $750 is available for travel and expenses. The proposal should constitute a new area of research, a new area of an existing research agenda, or support for substantial, ongoing work. Proposals are invited in any of the four areas of scholarship: discovery, teaching, integration and application (outlined by Ernest Boyer in Scholarship Reconsidered) as well as in artistic work. Proposals are competitive and will be reviewed and ranked by an off-campus evaluator. Priority will be given to faculty who were not awarded a Presidential Research Fellowships in the previous year. Faculty members who have summer research funding as part of their contracts in a given year are not eligible for Presidential Research Fellowships in that year. PRF funds are available only to tenured and tenure-track faculty.
Submission to a peer-reviewed journal-or the equivalent for an artistic project-is normally expected within a year (by July the following year); in disciplines where such a deadline is inappropriate, please include a date for submission in the proposal. A report on the research, a copy of the letter of submission, and a copy of the paper will be due at the same time. Publication or acceptance by the following year will result in an additional $1,000 stipend.
Guidelines
Proposals should address the specific nature and scope of the research, as well as its likely audience. Proposals should be no more than five pages, including a detailed budget for any expenses and a description of the proposed venue for publication or performance. External readers will evaluate proposals and make a recommendation.

Responsibilities of the Grantee
- If you have received PRF funds in the past five years, please indicate in your proposal if and where the project resulted in publication.
- Presidential Research Fellows will be expected to do a substantial portion of the search on campus through the summer of the award, unless the research calls them away from the area.
- Presidential Research Fellows will not be eligible for summer teaching other than travel courses lasting no more than two weeks.
- A report on the research, a copy of the letter of submission, and a copy of the paper will be due to the Dean of the College within a year of the award money being dispersed.
- Acknowledgement of Augustana financial assistance in products produced from work.
Seminar on Slave Narratives for History and English Faculty Members
Nomination Deadline: February 1, 2011
CIC, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and the United Negro College Fund will cosponsor Slave Narratives: A Seminar for Faculty Members to be held at Yale University on June 12-15, 2011. This multidisciplinary seminar is open to full-time faculty members in history, English, and related fields. David Blight, Class of 1954 Professor of American History at Yale University, will lead the seminar. There will be no expense for room, board, books, or the seminar program itself for faculty members selected to participate in the seminar.
