Navigating Grants.gov
At some time in your career you may want to apply for a grant from the federal government, and when you do that means you'll spend some time with Grants.gov, the portal for all federal grants.
Recently, Kristy Nabhan-Warren of the Religion Department applied for a National Endowment for the Humanities grant through Grants.gov. She kindly offers some tips and suggestions that can make your work easier and more efficient. Thank you to Kristy for sharing these ideas!
1) Register for Grants.gov early
2) Print out all of the registration directions and create a file for your particular grant--in my case it was the summer NEH. It really helped me to have a hard copy of the directions when I was online as sometimes the site can freeze up. Also, print out a hard copy of your entire application once it is complete as well as any and all Grants.gov. e-mail confirmations. Make sure you know your case file number, which is given to you by Grants.gov
3) If you have any problems whatsoever, call the toll- free Grants.gov number listed on the website. I found that the folks at Grants.gov are very helpful. When you call they create a case number for you so subsequent calls are fielded quite efficiently. I also called the NEH direct number when I had a particular question, and they answered my concerns promptly.
4) Make sure you type up allof your application documents

Presidential Research Fellowship
Mid-December may seem a ways off, but with the beginning of the term and Thanksgiving it may be sooner that you think. So I write with a reminder of the upcoming December 15 deadline for the Presidential Research Fellowship.

NOTE: Faculty members who have been awarded a New Faculty Resarch Award cannot receive and use a Presidential Research Fellowship Award at the same time. You can apply for both, and if accepted for both, decide later which one to accept.
Eligibility: All tenure-track and tenured faculty

Notification: January 15; funding dispersed July and August
Description
Presidential Research Fellowships support faculty research, scholarship and artistic work at Augustana. The fellowships will pay $4,000 for a faculty research project to be undertaken in the summer. Up to $750 is available for travel and expenses. The proposal should constitute a new area of research, a new area of an existing research agenda, or support for substantial, ongoing work. Proposals are invited in any of the four areas of scholarship: discovery, teaching, integration and application (outlined by Ernest Boyer in Scholarship Reconsidered) as well as in artistic work.
Submission to a peer-reviewed journal-or the equivalent for an artistic project-is normally expected within a year. In disciplines where such a deadline is inappropriate, please include a date for submission in the proposal. A report on the research, a copy of the letter of submission, and a copy of the paper will be due on the same date. Publication or acceptance by the following year will result in an additional $1,000 stipend.
Guidelines
Proposals should address the specific nature and scope of the research, as well as its likely audience. Proposals should be no more than five pages, including a detailed budget for any expenses and a description of the proposed venue for publication or performance. In those years when applications exceed funding, we anticipate that external readers will evaluate proposals and make a recommendation.

Responsibilities of the Grantee
- Presidential Research Fellows will be expected to do a substantial portion of the search on campus through the summer of the award, unless the research calls them away from the area.
- Presidential Research Fellows will not be eligible for summer teaching other than travel courses lasting no more than two weeks.
- A report on the research, a copy of the letter of submission, and a copy of the paper will be due to the Dean of the College within a year of award notification.
- Acknowledgement of Augustana's financial assistance in products produced from work.
