A number of realities have come together to motivate a discussion about whether Augustana College should arm members of its Public Safety staff. Those realities include continued mass shootings, like Sandy Hook; our experience in the mass causality drill on campus last spring; the hiring of Mark Beckwith (Milan's former police chief); the adoption of an "all hazards" approach to emergency planning; and, tactical changes in how law enforcement responds to an active shooter. Across the nation, we are seeing a trend among small liberal arts colleges to form their own police departments to better insure the safety of their campus communities.

Because of these realities and the resulting trend, the Augustana administration believes it is time for our campus community to discuss this issue and help us make a decision about whether or not to have an armed presence on campus. We hope to have a number of opportunities to discuss this topic among faculty, staff and students.

As your schedule and interest allow, please plan to join in a conversation on this topic in the Wilson Center on either Tuesday, December 10th at 9:00 AM or Wednesday, December 11th at 2:00 PM. Tom Phillis, Sheri Curran and Laura Ford will be present to frame the conversation and answer questions.
 
Ultimately, this is a decision to made by our Board of Trustees, but the administration is interested in obtaining feedback from the campus community as we make our recommendation to the board.

 




LGBTQ SAFE ZONE TRAINING FOR FACULTY, ADMINISTRATION, AND STAFF

A reception begins at 5:30 PM in the College Center lobby. The dinner begins at 6:00 PM and continues until 7:30 PM. Parents may drop off gifts for Santa to hand out in the Hammarskjöld Lounge (3rd floor) upon arrival to the reception. Gifts should not exceed $10 in value and be clearly labeled with children's names.

PROPOSALS FOR RENEWAL OR NEW STUDY AWAY/ABROAD PROGRAM
PROPOSALS DUE:  JANUARY 13, 2014

New programs seeking approval for 2015-2016 launches must turn in a proposal to IOPC by January 13th for consideration.  The same is true for programs on 3 year cycles seeking renewal and annual programs if they are in a designated review year.  Those of you leading programs on 2 year cycles are not due until Fall of next year.  In short, here are the deadlines coming up:

1.   All proposals for new programs are reviewed in the Winter and must have their materials in by January 13, 2014.

2.   Programs which would be due for renewal in Winter of this year (materials by Jan. 6) for inclusion in the 2015-2016 calendar include:

Spring Term in Ireland
London Summer Internships
Dijon Summer Program

3.   Programs on a 2 year cycle can turn in a brief renewal statement on their second, fourth, sixth, etc. iteration but must turn in a full re-proposal in their third, fifth, etc. iteration.

PILOT FOR OFFERING ONLINE SUMMER COURSES
SUBMISSION DEADLINE:  December 23, 2013

The Office of Academic Affairs proposes expanding the opportunities for innovation in course design by encouraging a pilot project that would allow our faculty the opportunity to develop a small number of online course offerings during our summer session. A full description of the pilot can be read HERE.

Please note that if you are interested in offering an online course but don't think you can have it ready by Summer 2014, contact Margaret Farrar, so that we can anticipate faculty interest in coming years.

Process for Approval and Criteria for Evaluation

Step 1: Faculty interested in offering courses for the Summer 2014 pilot [1] are asked to submit an expression of interest by December 2nd, with full proposals due by December 23rd, 2013 using the criteria below. The Deans group, working with ITS, will do a "first pass" to determine if the course: (1) is likely to have sufficient student enrollment, given past or projected enrollment information; (2) has the potential to meet the level of interaction expected; and (3) is able to be reasonably offered given existing technology/instructional tools. We will select the best two to four proposals to move forward.

Step 2: Once the courses have passed this initial vetting, we will send them on to EPC and then Senate to be evaluated using the criteria below. The courses would need to be approved through EPC by February 4th, 2013 in order to give instructors sufficient time to prepare their courses. If the pilot course is a completely new course, obviously we defer to EPC to utilize its usual criteria in addition to the online-specific criteria elaborated here. Faculty whose courses have been approved for the pilot will receive funding ($4000 for course development: $2000 initially and $2000 upon offering and assessment) from the Office of Academic Affairs.
 
Criteria:

  1. Appropriateness of course to online technology: What about this course lends itself readily to teaching and learning in an online platform? Which technologies might be most appropriate to deliver this course? Desired standard: Instructor clearly identifies the role the online environment will play in the student's experience in the course; course goals are well served by taking the course into an online format.
  2. Interaction and collaboration: What are the expectations for student participation, interaction, and collaboration in this course? How will these be assessed and evaluated? How and how often will students receive feedback on their work from the professor? Will the course be largely asynchronous, synchronous, or mixed? Desired standard: Course offers ample opportunities for interaction and communication student-to-student, student-to-faculty, and faculty-to-student. Regular feedback about student performance is provided in a timely manner throughout the course.
  3. Please discuss how the course meets college wide and department-specific learning outcomes. How will these outcomes be assessed in the course? Will you have data comparing your online version of the course with its traditional offering? Desired standard: Learning objectives, instructional and assessment activities are closely aligned.

[1] If a faculty member wishes to pilot a course, but knows s/he won't be able to develop it for Summer 2014, the faculty member should still submit the course with an anticipated offer date.

AUGUSTANA CONFERENCE ON STUDENT RESEARCH WRITING
April 4-5, 2014

Submissions for Session Proposals Due: February 15, 2014

On April 4 and 5, 2014, the Tredway Library will host a conference to explore how faculty and librarians can best teach the research process, research writing, and working with primary sources. While our students are accustomed to living in a world filled with information and are often adept at finding sources, they struggle with sorting through search results, determining what sources are appropriate to the research need, evaluating arguments, and dealing with paper (rather than digital) sources.

We are inviting a diverse group of faculty, librarians, and administrators to this conference, and we want to extend a special invitation to Augustana faculty. Please consider attending the conference and/or proposing a session. If you have helped students master research skills, developed a project which has encouraged students to engage with original primary source materials, or fostered successful collaborations with librarians, we encourage you to propose a paper or session. Feel free to forward the CFP to colleagues at other campuses who might wish to participate. Submissions are due February 15, 2014.  

Our keynote speaker is Sandra Jamieson, Director of Writing Across the Curriculum at Drew University and a principal researcher on the Citation Project (http://site.citationproject.net/). Jamieson will also conduct a workshop with faculty at the Friday Conversation on April 4.

"Enriching Science with its History/Biography and with the Arts"

Dr. Pangratios Papacosta, professor of physics at Columbia College, Chicago, will speak on "Enriching Science with its History/Biography and with the Arts." A reception will follow in the Teaching Museum of Art. In his remarks, Dr. Papacosta will discuss the idea that elements of history and biography, as well as the arts, can be integrated into the teaching of science in innovative ways. The linking of a scientific concept to an artifact, he says, reinforces learning and dissolves barriers between disciplines.

Dr. Papacosta's scholarship includes the history and the pedagogy of science, Einstein, space exploration and the intersection between science, humanities and the arts. His book, The Splendid Voyage: On New Sciences and New Technologies, has been translated into many languages. He currently serves on the Illinois Humanities Council Speakers Bureau, and also works with the International Journal of Teaching and Learning.

Having completed his Ph.D. in physics and a master's in history of science at the University of London, he was elected Fellow of the Institute of Physics of Great Britain. His lecture here at Augustana is co-sponsored by the departments of art history and physics, with support from the department of biology.


"Walk on the Wildside: From Garden Space to Game Space in the House of Octavius Quartio in Pompeii"

Sponsored by the Classics and Art History Departments with the support of Geology and History, this lecture will demonstrate Dr. Fredrick's innovative uses of the Unity game engine and gaming technology to advance our understanding of architectural space and decoratie ensembles in Pompeii. The lecture will be followed by a reception in the Augustana Museum Art Gallery, where the Roman works in our collection will be highlighted.

Dr. Fredrick is Associate Professor of Classical Studies and Director of Humanities at the University of Arkansas. He is the author of Roman Gaze: Vision, Power, and the Body, and has published numerous articles on Roman poetry, Roman houses, and Rome in cinema. Among other grants and awards, Dr. Fredrick received the grand prize at Unity Technologies' Mobile Generation Education Competition in 2011 and the Honors College Teaching Innovation Grant in 2006 to advance the technologies used in the teaching and research he draws on in this lecture.

NIETZSCHE'S ON THE GENEALOGY OF MORALS JANUARY 23-25, 2014

Though Friedrich Nietzsche produced many remarkable works, On the Genealogy of Morals is widely regarded as his most influential. For all its importance to philosophers and others who have followed in his wake, however, the precise meaning of many of Nietzsche's claims about the nature of morality remain in dispute, while his influence on fields as diverse as philology, theology, and anthropology is sometimes hard to see. This seminar therefore reconsiders On the Genealogy of Morals and its influence on the intellectual history of the last two centuries, with a particular emphasis on detailed examination of some of Nietzsche's key terms and their reception throughout subsequent generations of scholarly investigations. What exactly does Nietzsche mean by "genealogy"? What is the proper understanding of ressentiment? What's wrong with Judeo-Christian morality as it existed in Nietzsche's time? How have Nietzsche's answers to these questions informed the ways that scholars across the humanities and social sciences have approached these issues since? Through an exploration of many of the key problems and controversies that have occupied readers of On the Genealogy of Morals over the years, the seminar aims to develop a more detailed understanding of this philosophical seminal text.

CAPITALISM AND ITS FUTURES FEBRUARY 20-22, 2014

Not long ago, many economists and policy makers regarded the big questions of economics as essentially solved. Indeed, in the aftermath of the Cold War, capitalism's hegemony was largely unquestioned, and economic policy was regarded as sufficient to smooth out the worst effects of the modern business cycle. In the face of growing inequality, perpetual economic crisis, and looming climate catastrophe, however, the foundations of this political and economic consensus has been thrown increasingly into doubt. This seminar therefore explores the state of capitalism and its futures, focusing in particular on questions of growth, inequality, ecology and sustainability as they are conceptualized in the present. What, for instance, is the history of growth as an economic idea? Can we continue to assume its centrality as we move into the future? What, moreover, is the place of inequality in our current state of economic affairs? Can inequality as it exists today be justified? Or does it throw the long term stability of our economy into doubt? What does global warming presage for the future of the global economy? Can analyses of it be approached in purely economic terms? Or does it pose a problem of such enormity so as to overwhelm the boundaries of economic thought? What, in the end, is the future of capitalism as a system of providing for the general welfare? Can it continue to provide for human need in its present form? Or do contemporary concerns about inequality and ecological crisis force a re-thinking of how we approach the intersections of economics and human well being?

THE FUTURE OF HIGHER EDUCATION APRIL 24-26, 2014

Why does college cost so much? What should students learn? What is a college education actually good for? These are not new questions, but the recent economic downturn, coupled with increased interest in MOOCs and other forms of online learning, have made them of particular concern for students, parents, faculty and administrators alike. This seminar explores these questions, with an eye towards re-tracing the path by which higher education, once a heavily subsidized public good, has come to the straits in which it finds itself today. What, historically, has driven growth in higher education costs? Where are new cost-savings to be found? How have we thought about the value of the liberal arts over the years? What is their chief justification now? What has been the relationship between higher education and private business in the past? And what defines that complex set of relationships today? At a time when student debt is on the rise and job prospects are seemingly dimmer all around, this seminar hopes to come to terms with the place of higher education in an increasingly stagnant economy, and thus with how educators and administrators can better approach the problems confronting higher education today.
