WEEK 3 CARE Reports

Have you ever looked at the academic calendar and wondered why Preliminary Unsatisfactory Grade (PUG) Reports are due after the week 5 drop deadline? PUG deadlines also fall after the start date for courses taught in the second five weeks of the term. The system designed to help struggling students misses the mark a bit, doesn't it? Unfortunately, the group of students that is most adversely affected by these policies is our First Year cohort. These students often do not realize they are not doing well in a course until they receive a PUG. By that time, it is often too late to improve the course grade. Students are forced to withdraw or stay in the course and hope for the best-neither of which is a good option. Rest assured, the Student Success and Persistence Committee (a new iteration of the "old" Retention Committee) is working to modify these policies.

But...What can we do in the meantime to help struggling students,
especially our first year students?



WEEK 3 CARE REPORTS

If you have any first year students in your courses or your advising group, please take a moment during week 3 to submit a CARE report on any student showing signs of academic difficulty, lack of engagement, lack of involvement, attendance issues, homesickness, etc. We want to identify struggling first year students and provide multiple sources of support. The earlier in the term we provide support, the greater the effect can be.
