"I realized I'd felt this surprised sense of well being before, back when my father had first told me about the murder, and my reaction had been wonder and pride, pride in having brushed so closely with something so big and powerful as that, as death. And now here I was, a grown man, chronologically at least, just as proud to have caught malaria, as if that were some kind of achievement and not just evidence of folly. But I couldn't help it. I felt better than I had in months, so I quit worrying why." (96)

--from "Cloudbreak, California" by Kelly Daniels

As a young adult determined to explore the world and carve out his place in it, Kelly Daniels navigated a series of misadventures as a gringo in Central America and Mexico. Along the way, he contracted malaria, experimented with drugs, discovered a passion for surfing -- and tried to make sense of his father's incarceration. In his memoir, Daniels writes honestly of the situations (some funny, some near-deadly) that shaped him into the man -- and writer -- he is today. "Kelly Daniels is living proof that life really does provide second chances if one has the guts and raw talent to go after them," says writer Donald Ray Pollack. Come listen to Daniels read from his book at the next River Readings event on Thursday, January 16 at 7:00 PM in the Center for Student Life (Room 405). A reception and book-signing will follow the reading. (Copies of the book are available for purchase at the college bookstore; bring yours to the reading!)
