Sunday, May 25, 2014
11:30 AM - 12:30 PM

This year we hope to begin a new graduation tradition at Augustana College. We know some departments plan events with graduates and families between Baccalaureate and Commencement so that students have the opportunity to introduce their parents to their faculty advisors and mentors. This year, we'd like to extend this opportunity to all of our graduates and their families. Please plan to attend a reception between 11:30 AM  and 12:30 PM on Sunday May 25, 2014 to host graduates and families at four venues across campus, housed in different buildings and representing all of our majors and programs. The Office of Academic Affairs will provide light refreshments at each of these four venues.

  The locations are as follows:

Please help us make this a memorable time for your graduating seniors and their families to connect with you and other mentors who have been so important to them throughout these four years.

GEIFMAN LECTURE
Presented by Jeno L. Berta, a survivor of the Holocaust in Hungary
Monday, April 28, 2014
7:00 PM
Wallenberg Hall, Denkmann Building

Jeno Laszlo Berta was born in the village of Hegyhàtsàl, Hungary in 1937. When Hungary's Jewish population was targeted for extermination by the Nazis in 1944, the round-ups and deportations were run with ruthless and brutal efficiency.  Mr. Berta witnessed such evil personally as Jewish neighbors were marched away.  It was against this background that Mr. Berta's father brought home a Jewish family.  During the fall, winter and spring of 1945, the Berta family hid this family at profound peril to their own safety.  Mr. Berta will discuss this experience, as well as what was life like in rural Hungary during World War II.  Mr. Berta fought against the Soviets during the Hungarian uprising in 1956. He was forced to flee Hungary, escaping first to Austria and eventually the United States.  Through a twist of fate (and a broken-down bus) he arrived in Davenport, Iowa in March 1957.  For many years, he worked at Riverside Foundry/Sivyer Steel.  In 1989 became the proprietor of Jeno's Little Hungary in Northwest Davenport.

(Geifman Prize in Holocaust Studies will be presented during this program.)

CAUGHT! USING INSECTS TO INSPIRE ART - SEND YOUR PIECES FOR THIS FALL'S DISPLAY Caught!

Do insects inspire your artistic talents? The title of the fall Tredway Library exhibit is Caught: Using Insects to Inspire Art. We will have specimen cases from the Biology department and insect fossils from the Geology department that represent species of insects that might be found in this local area. The species that will be included are butterflies and moths, cicadas, praying mantis, beetles, dragonflies and others including flies. We are looking for personally created art pieces to display along with these specimens. The art can be 2 or 3 dimensional and might include jewelry, tapestry, quilts, paintings, drawings, or sculpture. The artist doesn't have to be affiliated with Augustana; we want to appeal to our community first so it can be representative of our area.We would like to limit the art pieces to those individually produced or limited runs and not include items widely available in stores. Pieces can be hung on display panels or placed in locked cases along with the specimens. If you are interested in having your work included in the display, please contact Connie Ghinazzi as soon as possible (x7494). Connie Ghinazzi would like to have a list of all the pieces that will be included  by Friday, May 30. It would be preferable to also have the art pieces at that time. They are able to stored over the summer in a locked library closet. If that doesn't work for you, please get them to Connie Ghinazzi by Wednesday, August 8th. We are very excited to collaborate with Art, Biology, and Geology to create this display. Art pieces created by our students, faculty and staff will really make this display come to life. We also plan to have a family friendly event sometime fall term and have Biology students act as docents for each display case. If you are interested, please contact Connie Ghinazzi. She'd love to hear your ideas!

Bucknell Digital Scholarship Conference: November 14-16, 2014
Call for Proposals
Deadline for Proposals:  August 1, 2014

Bucknell University, with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will host its first annual international digital scholarship conference. The theme of the conference is "Collaborating Digitally: Engaging Students in Faculty Research" with the goal of gathering a broad community of scholar-practitioners engaged in collaborative digital scholarship in research and teaching.

This conference will bring together a broad community of scholar-practitioners engaged in collaborative digital scholarship in research and teaching. We encourage presentations that emphasize forms of collaboration: between institutions of higher education; across disciplines; between faculty, librarians, and technologists; and between faculty and students. We welcome contributions from scholars, educators, technologists, librarians, administrators, and students who use digital tools and methods, and encourage submissions from emerging and established scholar-practitioners alike, including those who are new to digital collaboration.

Submission topics may include but are not limited to: engaging with space and place; creating innovative teaching and learning environments; perspectives on implications for the individual's own research and pedagogy within the institutional landscape, etc.

Presentations may take the form of short papers, project demos, electronic posters, panel discussions, or lightning talks.

For more information about submitting a presentation proposal, please go to the Bucknell Digital Initiatives website:http://goo.gl/eoOnK4 . The deadline for proposals is August 1, 2014.

If you have questions or would like more information about the submission process, please email conference coordinator Diane Jakacki: diane.jakacki@bucknell.edu.
