This Week's Message
Welcome to the start of Week 1! As I mentioned to our new faculty at orientation, one thing I have learned about us in my first year at Augustana is that our life is measured in weeks (1 to 10). Each week has its level of significance and its level of demands. I am becoming well trained to manage my life in 10-week intervals.
I wanted to take time today to provide you with a brief follow-up from this year's faculty retreat. Our goal at the retreat was to spend significant time developing an academic plan and identifying our academic priorities for the future. This process required us to develop or affirm our vision, values and priorities-in the context of our academic programs- and was grounded in the current realities of available resources. Here is the list of values and goals for our students and faculty that rose to the top (votes in parentheses):
Values: Integrity/Ethical (60); Reflective/Self-aware (52); Socially conscious (45); Rigorous (34); Open-minded/Adaptable (33); Student-centered (28); Sustainable (24); Curious (23); Inclusive/ Diverse (23) Engaged in the community (23)
Vision/Goals for Students: Critical thinkers/Intellectual sophistication (58); Engaged in the larger community (53); Intellectually curious (51); Life-long learners (35)
Vision/Goals for Faculty: Model integrity and inquiry for our students (56); Passionate teachers and mentors (46); Balance in life (42); Part of a vibrant intellectual community (40)
We still have work to do with respect to the Academic Planning Part II Break-Out Session. I have your completed strengths, opportunities, aspirations and realities worksheets in my office. We will have the opportunity to continue our discussions during the Week 2 Friday Conversation with the goal of identifying our common strengths and opportunities and aspirations that will ground our efforts to realize our vision. This will be followed by a short retreat (10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with lunch provided) during fall break (details will be coming next week), which will give us the chance to determine our academic priorities and discuss the process of how we will develop actions plans for our top priorities as we create an academic plan.
In addition, I had promised that we would make slides from the Advising and Budget presentations at the faculty retreat available online. They are now available to you at the Academic Affairs website: http://www.augustana.edu/x46129.xml
Hope you have a great week 1! I am looking forward to the engaging discussions that lie ahead of us. Thank you!
