Faculty Needs Assessment 2012
Thank you for participating in the Faculty Needs Assessment for 2012. We received 100 responses; you can see the results for yourself HERE, or visit the ACTL Moodle site (found under Departments and Other Groups/Faculty).
Before summarizing what we have planned thus far, I'd like to ask for your help in developing additional Friday Conversations (or other sorts of workshops) on teaching, mentoring, and research/publication. To this end, please let me know your areas of expertise so that I am not always calling on "the usual suspects." You can fill out this short form (or just shoot me an email) letting me know what you have to share with the campus in regards to professional development. DO NOT BE SHY OR MODEST.
Here's a summary of our current programming:
As in the past, learning how to incorporate active learning strategies into our classes is high on the list of priorities in the Faculty Needs survey; 87% of faculty respondents expressed interest in this. In what I am sure will be the first of several sessions from different colleagues on this topic, Mindi Mull (Psychology) will be offering her insights from the workshop led by Ken Bain that she attended in a Friday Conversation.
73% of faculty said that they were very or somewhat interested in learning more about "mentoring individual or small group research projects." This is not surprising given that so many of us are involved in advising and directing SI projects now. We began our discussion of this with a Friday Conversation hosted by the Student Research Committee on September 14; look for an updated website listing new funding opportunities for student-faculty research in the coming weeks. To further our conversation about best practices in undergraduate student research, Ellen Hay and I are planning a mini-conference this spring (probably in April, date TBA) where we'll invite faculty from regional colleges and universities to talk about how they structure and mentor student work, so that we can learn from each other --and get to know folks working through some of the same issues that we are.
65% of faculty said that they were very or somewhat interested in having more training on student advising. To this end, we've planned three Friday conversations this year dealing with student advising (September 7, January 18, and April 5). In addition, the Office of International and Off Campus Programs and the Multicultural Services Office are teaming up to offer two more sessions on Understanding International & Multicultural Students. The dates are Monday, November 26th and Thursday, November 29th.
Faculty also expressed a great deal of interest in learning more about how to do teaching and performance evaluation; Faculty Welfare will be sponsoring a Friday Conversation on this topic on October 12; look for other sessions on preparing pre-tenure and promotion materials. The Office of International and Office Campus Programs will be hosting a Friday Conversation on "taking students with you" (i.e., planning off campus trips from the ground up) on December 7.
