This Week's Message

A Chance to Think Ahead ...

The CEC is sponsoring a week-ten Friday conversation this week (10/28). The topic of conversation will be the future of liberal arts education and liberal arts colleges. As we are all too well aware, the demographic and financial challenges to liberal arts colleges are significant. Many of us have been thinking about this for some time. But we haven't had too many chances to think and talk about this in a setting that isn't primarily a response to the latest "crisis de jour." This Friday we have a chance to begin/continue this conversation in more responsive and less reactionary way.

The fact that this is a significant issue seems to be confirmed when liberal arts colleges with considerably more resources that we possess have entered the conversation. A recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education spotlighted the study of Smith College as they thought about this topic. This article might give an entry point for our conversations; you can read it HERE.

The Friday conversation will follow the usual format. Refreshments in the Wilson Center from 3:30 PM, and discussion beginning at 4:00. President Bahls, Deans Lawrence and Farrar (and others... including you, we hope)... will be part of the conversation.

Director of the Community Engagement Center
