This Week's Message

"What the heck are high impact practices anyway??"


Just like many other professions, we in higher education have developed our own set of peculiar terminology. Unfortunately, this ever evolving set of jargon doesn't automatically come with a glossary. So instead of making it easier to talk with each other about what we do, these phrases du jour often start to take on different meanings in different contexts for different people. Of course, this devolves into lingo that is eventually devoid of meaning and, instead of helping us communicate ideas or concepts more precisely, inspires something between mild disdain and the academic's equivalent of a primal scream.

I am increasingly suspicious that the words "high impact" followed by "practices" or "activities" have recently earned a hallowed place on such vacuous heights. I have seen more than a few brows furrowed and eyes rolled at the use of the phrase in the last year. Some of you have openly wondered, "What does ‘high impact' mean anyway?" Others seem to exclusively associate study abroad, internships, and undergraduate research (and maybe service-learning) as the Augustana equivalent of "High Impact Practices." And for a select few, these words seem to inflict murky intestinal discomfort.

In an effort to help us sort through this minefield of meanings and ensure that we are actually creating a meaningful educational experience for all of our students, I will talk a bit about the educational experiences and pedagogical approaches that underlie the notion of "high impact" practices. For example, could a good old fashion lecture actually be chock-full of "high impact practices?" Essentially, my hope is that together, we can distill this concept down to its essence and get a grasp on what "high impact" educating is, how it works, and what it looks like inside and outside of the classroom.
