Faculty News
Congratulations to Heidi Storl and Craig VanSandt!
Heidi has been appointed to Augustana's William Freistat Chair for Studies in World Peace, and Craig has been named to the Stuart Lee and Virginia Talbott Harbour Chair.
Established in 1992 by 1940 Augustana graduate William Freistat, the mission of the Freistat Chair is to raise awareness of efforts toward world peace and to encourage a stronger emphasis on peace studies within the Augustana curriculum. Under the guidance of our first two chairs, Dr. Jim Winship and Dr. Van Symons, the Freistat endowment has supported multi-disciplinary involvement in peace studies at Augustana College through research, seminars, lectures and other programs aimed at increasing the global awareness and experiences of our students.
Stuart Harbour was a 1943 graduate of Augustana who went on from Rock Island to earn a master's degree in business administration from Georgetown University and to enjoy a lengthy career as an analyst with the Small Business Administration in Washington, D.C. Virginia Harbour taught in the Fairfax County school system where she helped establish courses in home economics. The chair they established was first held by Dr. Richard Ballman, who is retiring from the active faculty this year.
