The Faculty Welfare Committee is leading a Faculty Forum on a proposed revision of chapter 4 of the revised Faculty Handbook. This chapter concerns procedures for promotions and post-tenure reviews, including procedures for APT faculty. The forum will be held Tuesday, April 17 at 11:30 AM in the Chicago Room of the College Center. A draft of the revised chapter was sent to all faculty on Friday, March 23.

Pamela S. Karlan, co-director of Stanford's Supreme Court Litigation Clinic, will speak on same-sex marriage and the Supreme Court. She is the Kenneth and Harle Montgomery Professor of Public Interest Law and co-director of Stanford's Supreme Court Litigation Clinic. Her primary scholarly interests lie in the areas of constitution law and constitutional litigation, with an emphasis on voting rights and anti-discrimination law. Karlan is Augustana's Phi Beta Kappa visiting scholar for 2012. She will also visit classes and talk with students.

Letania Ferreira presents: The Influence of Attribute Wording on Product Preferences of Young Consumers in the U.S. and Russia: A Cross-Cultural Study.
Product labeling for genetically modified (GM) foods and an effective way to communicate the benefits of GM foods to consumers are important issues to marketers and policy makers. The study analyzes the differences in consumer ratings of various products and the trade-offs among the value of specific attributes when the products are described identically but labeled differently. Significant differences were found between ratings of young U.S. and Russian consumers. Russia is a big marketplace and a better understanding of preferences and behavior of Russian consumers toward GM foods is essential for designing new market strategies and information policies.
Xiaowen Zhang presents: The Politics of Compliance with Adverse WTO Dispute Settlement Rulings in China
In this presentation, Xiaowen will present her research on China's implementation record in the WTO dispute settlement system. The main finding is that although China is strongly motivated to uphold the legitimacy of the WTO dispute settlement system, its domestic politics can impede successful implementation.

Bishop Gene Robinson
"Being Gay and Religious: Mission Impossible?"

V. Gene Robinson, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire, will give the convocation lecture, "Being Gay & Religious: Mission Impossible?"
Robinson is widely known for being the first openly gay, non-celibate priest to be ordained a bishop in a major Christian denomination. He has announced his intention to retire in 2013.
He has served as bishop since June 2003. A 1969 graduate of the University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn., he has a B.A. in American studies/history. In 1973, he completed the M.Div. degree at the General Theological Seminary in New York.
Co-author of three AIDS education curricula for youth and adults, Robinson has done AIDS work in the United States and Africa. He has been an advocate for antiracism training in the diocese and wider church. He holds two honorary doctorates and has received numerous awards from national civil rights organizations.
His story is featured in the 2007 feature-length documentary, "For the Bible Tells Me So." In 2008, his book, In the Eye of the Storm: Swept to the Center by God was released.

The Harold T. and Violet M. Jaeke award is given annually to recognize outstanding performance by staff and faculty who show excellence in teaching, in developing positive personal influences upon students that will encourage full development of their abilities, and in enhancing the common life of the entire College Community.
The Jaeke Award Committee reviews nominations and makes selections. This year's Jaeke Committee members are: Pareena Lawrence, Lynn Jackson, Rosita Tendall, David Arbesu, Pam Trotter, Cyrus Zargar, Chuck Hyser, Paul Weissburg, Brad Foley, Shanan Pettifer, Beth Ducey, Katie Devore, and Mohammed Hussein.
Nomination Forms are due in Academic Affairs no later than 4:00 PM on Thursday, March 29, 2012.

You are Cordially Invited to the reception for the Thirty-sixth Annual Rock Island Fine Arts Exhibition in the Augustana College Art Museum, Centennial Hall, on Friday, March 30, 4:30-6:30 p.m. The exhibition catalog will be debuted and awards will be announced at 5:40 p.m. Co-sponsored by the Rock Island Art Guild and the Augustana College Art Museum, entry is open to artists residing with a 150-mile radius of the Quad Cities. The exhibition continues through April 22, open noon to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays (also open on Sundays: April 1, 15 and 22 from noon to 4 p.m.; closed Easter Weekend, April 6-9). Included in the exhibition are works by Augustana faculty members Megan Quinn and Corrine Smith, and an Honorable Mention Award will be presented to Veronica Smith (Augustana '12).
The public is cordially invited to submit a single ballot for the artwork of their choice for the "People's Choice Award." The piece receiving the most votes will receive a $50 prize. Results will be tallied and announced on the final day of the exhibition.

Faculty are invited to a special faculty screening of Pelada - the documentary film created by our April 12, 2012 Convocation speaker, Gwendolyn Oxenham. Many of you are requiring your students to attend the April 12 Convocation. There will be screenings of the documentary for students in the two weeks prior to Gwendolyn's convocation, so the April 3rd faculty screening will allow you to be one step ahead of your students.
Pelada synopsis - Pelada is a documentary following Luke and Gwendolyn, two former college soccer start who didn't quite make it to the pros. Not ready for it to be over, they take off to over twenty countries around the world, chasing the game - the global phenomenon spanning gender, race, religion, and class. The film tells the stories of the players they meet along the way...from prisoners in Bolivia to moonshine brewers in Kenya, from freestylers in China to women who play in hijab in Iran, Pelada is the story of the people who play. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.
In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman's value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader. While women have made great strides in leadership over the past few decades, the United States is still 90th in the world for women in national legislatures, women hold only 3% of clout positions in mainstream media, and 65% of women and girls have disordered eating behaviors.

RECOGNITION OF STUDENT HONORS
SENIOR HONORS CONVOCATION
All faculty and staff are invited to the Recognition of Student Honors at 11:30 AM in Hanson Hall of Science Room 102, in conjunction with the Celebration of Learning, scheduled for Saturday, May 19, 2012. This program will honor underclassmen receiving honors. No registration for the Celebration of Learning is required to attend the Recognition of Student Honors, if you are not actively presenting or otherwise attending the Celebration of Learning.
All faculty and staff are also invited to the Senior Honors Convocation scheduled for Saturday, May 20, 2012 at 12:00 PM in Centennial Hall. The ceremony will recognize academic and departmental honors for senior students, senior students in Phi Beta Kappa, Mortar Board, Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Beta Delta, Lincoln Academy Student Laureate, and SGA awards. FACULTY WILL WEAR ACADEMIC REGALIA DURING THE SENIOR HONORS CONVOCATION EVENT.

Audrey Adamson from Residential Life and Ken Brill from Student Activities will join us to talk about "Promoting Student Success: The Role of Student Services at Augustana". From the recent survey of Augustana graduates:
Those who believe Augustana provided an outstanding education seem to indicate that some of the quality has to do with the College's residential nature. More than half of those who said they received an outstanding education and four out of ten of those who felt their Augustana education was above average strongly agreed with the statement "I learned as much from my out-of-class experience as I did from my academic program."
Audrey and Ken will provide an overview of their current programs and provide opportunities for interested faculty to engage with students on a different level. All faculty, administrators and staff are welcome to attend. Please RSVP to Jon Clauss.
