The Gen Ed Committee invites you to join us for one or both discussions that we have scheduled this week on Monday, January 23rd at 4:00 in the Olin Auditorium and Friday, January 27th at 4:00 in the Wilson Center.
We are seeking your input about our proposal for realigning Augustana's general education curriculum (AGES). We want to hear from you before we finalize our recommendations to the RISE committee in preparation for the upcoming curriculum vote. We are asking for feedback on key components of our AGES program (LSFY, learning perspectives, learning communities, and G, D, and Q suffixes).
The most recent draft of our realignment proposal that may serve as a starting point for next week's discussions can be found HERE.
We hope you will be able to join us, but if you are not, please feel free to email your feedback to your General Education division representative or Alli Haskill, interim Chair.

"A hundred years of innovation: adding moving pictures to the theatre performance."
A part of his pre-tenure leave, Adam Parboosingh (assistant professor of theatre arts) will discuss the integration of video projections into the theatre design process. Merging cinematic images with the live performance has been common practice since the early days of motion picture: so why do most call projection design a new field in the theatre world? Along with a little history lesson, Adam will discuss the rationale for using this medium to create the scenographic world of the play.
Enjoy a thought provoking production of How I Learned to Drive and stay for a discussion about recent innovations to Potter Hall.
NOMINATIONS FOR STUDENT ALUMNI COUNCIL AND STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES TO THE ALUMNI BOARD
Again this year we would appreciate your assistance and advice in identifying outstanding students to serve on the Student Alumni Council and as student representatives on our Alumni Association Board of Directors. Your input in years past has been critically important and greatly appreciated. Please reflect on those First Year students with whom you have become acquainted and consider nominating them for Council involvement and Board service. Members of the Student Alumni Council and student representatives to the board take on the role of bringing current students' experiences to Board discussions as well as assisting to educate students about the many ways alumni support our college. Student representatives carry full membership on the Board and participate with Alumni Board members to serve the college throughout their student years at Augustana. A first-year student begins their association in the fall of their sophomore year and serves for three years.
We are looking for students who:
• have developed a love for Augustana College and who display school spirit;
• have demonstrated leadership qualities;
• are creative;
• are outgoing and enthusiastic;
• have a strong work ethic;
• will be committed to the work of the Board and to attendance at Board meetings and functions.

CIEE INTERNATIONAL FACULTY DEVELOPMENT SEMINARS
For those who may be interested in the two-week international development seminars from CIEE as well as the $3,000 grant from the International & Off-Campus Programs (IOP) office to three faculty participants, click HERE for information on the seminars, the grants from the IOP office and from CIEE as well, and some criteria used when vetting applications for the IOP grants. At the bottom of the sheet is a list of past recipients. Please feel free to contact them to get the story of their two-week program.
There are 18 different programs this year, including a new one not in the brochure (but available online) in Cuba.
Applications for the seminars are due to CIEE in March, but applications for the IOP office's $3,000 grants are due February 6, 2012.
NATURE ART COMPETITION!
To celebrate Darwin's birthday, the Darwin Club invites the Augustana campus to appreciate the natural world around us.
Week 7 and Week 8 we will be holding an art competition featuring nature inspired artwork.
Glue together sticks, leaves, and seashells! Be creative with mediums! We accept photography, jewelry, collage, painting, or sculpture!
Drop off all artwork on the 2nd Floor of the Library anytime Week 8. On Friday of week 8, a winner will be chosen and awarded a $10 gift certificate!

Callie Crossley presents "Civil Rights History: Back to the Future?"

Selma was the scene of the major turning point in civil rights history-what happened there sparked national support for a voting rights act to protect the rights of ALL American citizens. So, how is it that some of Selma veterans are marching again for voting rights? In this talk, Callie Crossley will highlight certain major efforts of the modern civil rights movement that are being re-fought today-same issues, different decade.
Callie Crossley is the Host/Executive Editor of "The Callie Crossley Show", a live daily call in radio program, airing on WGBH Radio, 89.7. She is a public speaker and television and radio commentator for national and local programs. She is also a regular contributor on National Public Radio's The Takeaway, and Fox 25 Boston TV's Morning Show, and she often guests on CNN's Reliable Sources, and the PBS News Hour. Crossley appears weekly on WGBH-TV's Beat the Press, a media criticism program which examines local and national media coverage, and Basic Black, a public affairs show focusing on current events and cultural issues concerning black communities. Ms. Crossley was a producer for Eyes On the Prize: America's Civil Rights Years, the critically acclaimed documentary series, which earned her an Oscar nomination and major film and journalism awards, including the Gold Baton of the DuPont-Columbia Award, considered the Pulitzer Prize of broadcast journalism. A former producer for ABC News 20/20, Ms. Crossley is also Program Manager for the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University, and a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow, guests lecturing at colleges and universities about media literacy, media and politics, and the intersection of race, gender and media. Ms. Crossley has been awarded two Harvard Fellowships-- a Nieman Fellowship, and a Fellowship at the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government. She is a graduate of Wellesley College, and holds an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Pine Manor College and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Cambridge College. In the fall of 2011 she was featured in the book Boston: Inspirational Women photographs by Bill and Kerry Brett, text by Carol Beggy.
She visits Augustana as a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow and will be guest instructor in numerous classes. She enjoys talking with students about the collision of old and new media, media and politics, media literacy and the intersection of race, gender and media.

If you like to travel, or you like to eat, and most especially if you like to do both, come to the next "Travel Reads" book club discussion on Sunday, January 29 at 4:00 p.m. in the Great Hall of Carlsson Evald. We will discuss the colorful (!) coffee table book No Reservations by Anthony Bourdain. Bourdain traveled the world filming episodes for his culinary television show and he recorded some of his most interesting stories - and photographs - in this book. You'll never believe some of the things he's eaten!
The Travel Reads book club is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
International Food Festival Cookbook for Sale
"The Tasteful Table: Celebrating the Global Community at Augustana College" is now on sale, in celebration of the 10th year for the International Food Festival (IFF).
The cookbook includes dishes from the IFF as well as new recipes from Augustana faculty, staff, food services and from Augustana's international students. More than 60 people contributed to the book. It has 128 pages and includes more than 250 recipes.
Cookbooks are $10 each and proceeds support Augustana's community of international students.
Books are available at the International and Off-Campus Programs office in Sorenson Hall. Checks and cash are accepted.
This year's food festival is February 4. Tickets are $12.50 each and are now on sale through the Augie Ticket Office.
Midwest Faculty Seminar Presents "Death and the Politics of Life"

"Happy 200th Birthday, Charles Dickens! Books from Special Collections"

Born in London in 1812 to a father who impoverished the family, Charles Dickens went on to write 15 novels and many short stories and other writings, and is considered to be one of the greatest writers of English literature. The current display in the library features several first editions of Dickens's works. Our copy of Little Dorrit, for example, is open to the cover of one of the serial parts in which the books were first issued. The parts were later bound. In addition to his famous works such as Bleak House and Oliver Twist, Dickens also produced five Christmas books, beginning with A Christmas Carol, published in 1843. Our copies of these books are in the original cloth bindings. Join the birthday party on Tuesday, February 7 at 4:00: Cake and punch, and exhibit of books from Special Collections.
NEW EXHIBIT IN SPECIAL COLLECTIONS
"Worth A Thousand Words: Nineteenth Century British Illustrated Books"
For many years, books for people of all ages included illustrations along with the text. Such images are often unfamiliar to most of today's readers because, whether for scholarly or economic reasons, most of these books are printed today without the illustrations that originally accompanied them. This is unfortunate because many of these illustrations are great works of art and illuminate their accompanying text. The nineteenth century in Britain was a golden era for book illustration, producing some of the most important and beautiful illustrated books ever made. This exhibit is a wonderful opportunity to see text and image together. It features illustrated editions of works by authors such as Charles Dickens and Jane Austen, and illustrators including Thomas Rowlandson, George Cruikshank, and Walter Crane.
