Bo Dziadky presents "The Augustana College Field Stations After 20 Years"

The first Augustana field station Green Wing Environmental Laboratory was purchased in 1991. The Collinson and Beling Ecological Preserves were acquired in 1992 and 1998, respectively. As at most biological field stations in the USA, the major uses of our stations are for student and faculty research, summer classes and community outreach. Numerous facility upgrades and projects have made our stations more useful and other functions are pending.

Tim Lomperis arrived in Vietnam just as America was leaving. Both he and and America, to say nothing of Vietnam, got caught up in the denouement, or unraveling, of the entire Vietnam War. What also unraveled was Lomperis' faith in his own country as the standard bearer of democracy in the Cold War. This is a Baby Boomer's story of its generation's "bad war," and how at least one member of this generation found something of a redemption in his participation in this divisive war.
Timothy Lomperis knows the Vietnam War, both as a soldier and as a scholar. In the latter role he has published extensively, including The War Everyone Lost--and Won, hailed as one of the best books ever written on that conflict. Even though he served two tours "in country" during the war's most frustrating period--from the infamous Easter Invasion through the Paris Peace negotiations--this is the first time he has written about the war from such a personal perspective.
Tim Lomperis is a 1969 Augustana graduate. After serving two tours of duty in Vietnam, Tim earned an MA in international affairs from Johns Hopkins and an MA and PhD in political science from Duke University. He is a professor of political science at St. Louis University and his 5th book, The Vietnam War from the Rear Echelon: An Intelligence Officer's Memoir, will be published in September 2011.

This year during Homecoming week, Saga Art and Literary Magazine will be hosting an Alumni and Professor reading. Faculty are invited to you to join them on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 5:00 PM to share their own work, their favorite work by a famous author, or just come and listen and enjoy the evening as faculty and alumni alike share their literary saga at Cool Beanz Coffeehouse. If you would like to join Saga for homecoming weekend, Saga will also be participating in the Cardboard Regatta on Saturday morning during the Homecoming Festival. Andreen residents and Lower Campus Council members are very excited to continue the tradition of Hallowdreen this year. Hallowdreen is a trick-or-treat event open to children (ages 0-12) of Augustana's staff, faculty, and administration. Participating Andreen residents decorate the halls with kid-friendly themes and hand out candy to those who visit. Additionally, Augustana's Lower Campus Council will be providing complimentary snacks, simple craft projects, and a family-friendly Halloween movie for kids and families to enjoy along with our residents. We hope to see you there!

The Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center and the Scandinavian Department at Augustana College are sponsoring a lecture by Dr. Lars M. Andersson from Uppsala University. The title of the talk is "Sweden and World War II: Between the Allies and the Axis Powers." It will take place in the Loft in the College Center, and there will be ample time for questions and discussion. A light lunch will also be served.
Dr. Andersson is a senior lecturer in and the chair of the Department of History at Uppsala University. He has written extensively on Swedish history since the late 19th century, with a particular emphasis on Sweden, Nazi Germany and World War II, Swedish Antisemitism, and refugee policies. From 2002-2006 he was the editor-in-chief of Historisk Tidskrift, the leading Swedish journal of history. His recent collection Sverige och Nazityskland. Skuldfrågor och moraldebatt (Stockholm: Dialogos, 2007) [Sweden and Nazi Germany. Questions of Guilt and Debates over Morality] provides an overview of several decades of research among Swedish historians on Sweden and World War II.

PLANETARIUM OPENS TO THE PUBLIC

John Deere Planetarium will be open to the public on Saturday, October 29, 2011 for the annual Fall Open House. The planetarium, located at 820 38th Street, Rock Island, will be open from 7:00 - 8:30 PM with indoor and outdoor programs led by planetarium director, Lee Carkner. Admission is free. The star of this year's show will be Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system. Telescope views will show off the planet's cloud bands and four large moons. The evening's events will also include a planetarium show where the wonders of the night sky will be presented. Views of the Moon, planets, double stars and other astronomical objects will be provided. In addition, the Getz-Rogers Gallery, where images of celestial objects and a quarter-ton piece of the Canyon Diablo meteor are on display, will also be open to the public. The observing areas are unheated so dress appropriately. In the event of cloudy sky conditions, telescope views may not be possible, but the indoor programs will still be offered. The Midwest Journal of Undergraduate Research would like to invite all undergraduate students from any ACM institution to submit manuscripts from any discipline to be considered for publication in the journal's 2012 issue.

- Submissions may be from any discipline as long as they are research based.
- May use any standard citation style
- 300-word Abstract (5-50 pages in length)
- Accompanying your submission you must provide the following information:
- Name
- School/Graduating Class
- Major
- Discipline of paper
- State what citation style is used
- Daytime Phone Number
- Email Address
- Mailing Address
- The name and contact information of a sponsoring professor

PROPOSING AN OFF-CAMPUS OR INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM?
The deadline for any program proposal for a study abroad program or domestic off-campus study program for the 2013-2014 academic year has been moved from December 16th until January 9th to allow faculty the Winter break to finalize their proposals. Program proposals can be for any of the following:
1. A term or half-term (domestic or international ) program using a team of Augustana faculty or a combination of Augustana faculty and 3rd party providers. (ex. East Asia, Holden, Brazil )
2. A summer language immersion or other program type (domestic or international) (ex. Spanish in the Andes, Rocky Mountain Geology, Lit & Music in Paris)
3. An on-campus course which includes a travel component during Fall, Winter or Spring Break or in early summer. (ex. Religion in Rome, Classics in Greece, etc.)
4. A for-credit program fully contained within a term break (ex. Nicaragua Spring Break programs of recent years.)
If you are interested in leading a program in 2013-2014, please schedule a meeting with Allen Bertsche in the next few weeks so he can assist you with the proposal process.
If you have lead a program and wish to repeat it, the same basic principles apply as with new programs, save that you can focus your proposal on the new or altered components of the original program.. If you are planning to lead a program that is running this year or has run any prior year, you must reapply with a proposal. Only programs which are offered each academic year do not need to reapply if they wish to run in 2013-2014.
