Women's & Gender Studies Tea-Hour Series

Sarah Horowitz, Special Collections Librarian, will present: "Cranford Illustrated: Gender, Nostalgia, and the Gift Book". Hugh Thomson's illustrated edition of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel Cranford, published in 1891, was a great popular success upon its appearance. Thomson was an artist of the "Wig and Powder School," whose artists typically illustrated older novels or stories in a nostalgic manner. This talk will explore issues of feminism, illustration, and the gift book in Thomson's Cranford. The convergence of Thomson's illustrations, text, and the book's physical container led to the suppression of Gaskell's serious attempts to address the lives of women considered superfluous in Victorian England.

The Office of International & Off-Campus Programs is currently seeking program proposals for the 2013-2014 academic year. All proposals for the 2013-2014 will be due to the International & Off-Campus Study Committee by December 16, 2011.

Find out how you can participate in an off-campus program (domestic or international). Whether you want to join an existing program or work with other faculty to develop one of your own, come and find out how. Maybe you want to set up a summer course in Finland, Fiji or Fargo, or add Spring Break Program in Savannah or Singapore to your winter course, or even join up with a program that already exists such as Asia, Ecuador or London. We will give you the story on how to get started.

Come to the event and we will explore the many options that exist for our faculty to lead or teach on programs around the world. We can also help you develop service learning or internship options across the country or around the world to add to a course or learning community.

During the weekend of September 9 - 11, 2011, Augustana College invites the community to "9/11 in 2011: A Decade of Learning and Living". Several free, on-campus events will honor the memory of those lost on 9/11, provide opportunities for learning and sharing, and help the community move forward. 9/11 was a moment that involved all of us as a community--one that both united and divided us in profound ways. This event is a wonderful opportunity to learn from each other and consider the way forward.

Friday and Saturday's events are organized and generously sponsored by Augustana's Institute for Leadership and Service, part of Augustana's Community Engagement Center, as well as Academic Affairs, the President's Office, and the Office of Multicultural Services. Sunday's Interfaith commemoration is an effort of Churches United of the Quad Cities Area and Augustana Campus Ministries.

Please consider attending these events, and encourage your friends to attend. The various speakers will provide valuable insights into a momentous event that has moved from present-day tragedy to history in ten short years. Wendy Smooth
"Women in American Politics-Why So Few?"

Every election year we ask the same big question-Could this be the next "Year of the Woman" in American politics? Yet, time and again we see only marginal gains in the numbers of women elected to political offices. In fact, the 2010 elections even resulted in a decrease in the numbers of women elected to political office for the first time in several decades. Why are there so few women in politics? What will it take to increase women's representation in U.S. politics? Most importantly, how will you contribute to boosting women's share of political power?

Wendy G. Smooth is Assistant Professor of Public Policy in the Department of Women's Studies at The Ohio State University and a faculty affiliate with the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity. Currently, Dr. Smooth is completing her first book entitled, Power and Influence: The Impact of Race and Gender in American State Legislatures (University of Michigan Press, under contract), which focuses on African American women elected to state legislatures across the country and examines the conditions under which they are most effective in representing their communities. Dr. Smooth is a graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana, the only historically black Catholic university in the country. There she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and went on to earn advanced degrees in Women's Studies, Government and Politics from the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland.

Dr. Smooth's visit is supported by an endowed fund honoring Stanley Erickson, a longtime political science professor.

A Memorial Tribute to Jim Konrad
August 23 - September 17, 2011

Recognized as one of the top artists of our region, Jim (James) Konrad (1943-2011) is fondly remembered for his willingness to share his expertise on the particulars of artists' materials and methods-whether it was conserving a painting, discussing art history or making chalk pastels from scratch. He joined the faculty at Augustana in 1989 as an assistant professor. He was an instructor in printmaking, drawing and art education at Augustana when he passed away. This exhibition will be an overview of his life's work.

On the anniversary of his birthday, Jim Konrad's artistic contributions will be celebrated by Augustana faculty, area artists and supporters.

New Exhibit in Special Collections
"Food For Thought"

Interest in food and sustainability issues has been growing at Augustana, as exemplified in programs such as Farm to Fork, Augie Acres, and last year's Food Reads series. But what did an interest in food look like before the current century? Usually food isn't allowed in Special Collections, but the exhibit "Food for Thought: Books on Food and Cooking from Special Collections" uses historical food-related books to examine that question. This exhibit will be on display in Special Collections, on the first floor of the library, throughout fall term.


National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipend Competition

Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. Summer Stipends provide $6,000 for two consecutive months of full-time research and writing. Recipients must work full-time on their projects for these two months and may hold other research grants supporting the same project during this time. The Summer Stipends program accepts applications from researchers, teachers, and writers, whether they have an institutional affiliation or not. Applicants with college or university affiliations must, however, be nominated by their institutions.

All applicants for Summer Stipends must submit their proposals through Grants.gov, the central federal government portal for all grant applications. What follows is a step-by-step guide for submitting your application through Grants.gov.

Online applications accepted through September 29, 2011. The internal deadline for Augustana College is September 8, 2011 as the college can only nominate two applicants. National Endowment for the Humanities Enduring Questions Course Development

The NEH Enduring Questions grant program supports the development of a new course that will foster intellectual community through the study of an enduring question. This course will encourage undergraduates and teachers to grapple with a fundamental question addressed by the humanities, and to join together in a deep and sustained program of reading in order to encounter influential thinkers over the centuries and into the present day. No discipline, field, or profession can lay an exclusive claim to enduring questions. They have long held interest for young people, and they allow for a special, intense dialogue across generations. The Enduring Questions grant program helps promote such dialogue in today's undergraduate environment.

Courses may be taught by faculty members from any department or discipline in the humanities or outside the humanities provided humanities sources are central to the course. NEH Enduring Questions grants can provide up to $25,000 in outright funds for projects serving a single institution. Recipients may begin their grants as early as May 1, 2012, but must begin no later than January 1, 2013. A letter (from the president, provost, dean, program chair, or department chair at the institution at which the course will be taught) MUST certify 1) that the institution supports the proposed course; 2) that the course is new; and 3) that during the grant period it will be offered at least twice by each faculty member involved in developing it. Ideally, this letter would also explain the importance of the course within the institution's overall curriculum.

COOKBOOK
Help us celebrate the 10th Annual International Food Festival!

Over the past few years we have been asked to put together a cookbook of not only the recipes of the dishes served, but also to include favorites from the Augustana Community. We need your favorite recipes! Go exotic! Go international! Go Midwest or Southwestern! Whatever you want - we'd love to have your favorite recipes. The book will be published and available for sale at the Food Festival which will be held on Saturday, February 4th.

What do we need from you? We need 3 - 4 recipes. Please include all ingredients, measurements and instructions. Send your recipes to Jane Tiedge.

When do we need them? Friday, September 30.
Proceeds from the sale of the cookbook will go to help support international students on campus.

2011-2012 Community Lecture Series

The Augustana Center for the Study of Ethics is pleased to announce the 2011-2012 Community Lecture Series. We bring this to your attention for two reasons: (1) one presentation of each lecture will be scheduled for on-campus; let me know if there is a particular course that you are teaching this year that might interface with one of the lectures, in which case we will schedule it for the term you are teaching the course, and (2) we encourage you to bring the lectures to the attention of groups and organizations of which you might be a part. Each participant agrees to present her or his lecture once on campus and up to three times off campus. The Center for the Study of Ethics pays the presentation stipends so that the lectures can be made available to community groups and organizations without cost.

2011-2012 Faculty Research Forum (FRF) Schedule

The FPF is a friendly, interdisciplinary working group of researchers and writers that meet two times a term to workshop works-in-progress (e.g., book chapters, grant proposals, conference papers, journal articles, book proposals, and other forms of scholarly production). Volunteers submit their work to the group, and then we gather over drinks and snacks to ask questions and provide constructive critiques--all in an effort to improve our research and writing.

In years past, the group has consisted of a good mix of people-from assistant to full professors in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. (People with sabbaticals or pre-tenure paid leaves often find the group especially valuable.) We ask only that members make a commitment to give and to receive feedback on works-in-progress. This typically means that each member presents a draft about once a year and attends the other meetings as regularly as possible.

A 1977 graduate of the college, Dr. Nolan first worked at Augustana in 1982, when he served for two years as resident director of Seminary Hall. He returned to Augustana in the 1990s, joining the faculty as an adjunct instructor of English and advisor to campus publications. He had served the college as both a teacher and administrator.
