Are we living Bradbury's vision?

 

This Augie Reads convocation, inspired by Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, explores questions surrounding technology and its impact on social interactions today. Debating questions on this topic are authors Marc Prensky and Mark Bauerlein. Prensky and Bauerlein have very different views on technology and social relationships. The moderator will invite questions from students and faculty as we explore the issues raised by Bradbury almost 60 years ago.
Marc Prensky is an internationally-acclaimed speaker, writer, consultant, game designer, and author in the field of education and learning. He holds degrees from Oberlin, Middlebury, Yale and Harvard, and has taught at all levels from elementary to college. Prensky is the author of three books: Digital Game-Based Learning, Don't Bother Me Mom - I'm Learning and Teaching Digital Natives: Partnering for Real Learning.

Mark Bauerlein earned his doctorate in English at UCLA. He has taught at Emory since 1989, with a two-and-a-half year break in 2003-05 to serve as the Director, Office of Research and Analysis, at the National Endowment for the Arts. He has published many academic books and articles on American literature, history, and philosophy. His latest book is The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future; Or, Don't Trust Anyone Under 30.

The Fall Kickoff is this Thursday! Employees and families are invited to join colleagues for food, three-legged races, and a water balloon toss or two. Don't forget to get your bag toss or volleyball team* and compete for prizes. A Jumpin' Joey's Bounce House will be available for the youngest Vikings. If you would rather relax on the lawn and listen to the soulful sounds of Ellis Kell, please bring a blanket or lawn chair. Make an evening of it...at 7 PM cheer on our student athletes at the season openers for football and women's soccer. The first women's soccer game is on the new Thorson-Lucken Field.

A Memorial Tribute to Jim Konrad
August 23 - September 17, 2011

Recognized as one of the top artists of our region, Jim (James) Konrad (1943-2011) is fondly remembered for his willingness to share his expertise on the particulars of artists' materials and methods-whether it was conserving a painting, discussing art history or making chalk pastels from scratch. He joined the faculty at Augustana in 1989 as an assistant professor. He was an instructor in printmaking, drawing and art education at Augustana when he passed away. This exhibition will be an overview of his life's work.

On the anniversary of his birthday, Jim Konrad's artistic contributions will be celebrated by Augustana faculty, area artists and supporters.

New Exhibit in Special Collections
"Food For Thought"

Interest in food and sustainability issues has been growing at Augustana, as exemplified in programs such as Farm to Fork, Augie Acres, and last year's Food Reads series. But what did an interest in food look like before the current century? Usually food isn't allowed in Special Collections, but the exhibit "Food for Thought: Books on Food and Cooking from Special Collections" uses historical food-related books to examine that question. This exhibit will be on display in Special Collections, on the first floor of the library, throughout fall term.

 


 

Augustana Faculty Recognized by
National Institute of Learning Outcomes Assessment

As was noted at the retreat, the Augustana faculty was recently recognized by the National Institute of Learning Outcomes Assessment for its focus on improving student learning. Staff from NILOA will be visiting Augustana during the fall to further study changes that we have made in our curriculum and its assessment. National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipend Competition

Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. Summer Stipends provide $6,000 for two consecutive months of full-time research and writing. Recipients must work full-time on their projects for these two months and may hold other research grants supporting the same project during this time. The Summer Stipends program accepts applications from researchers, teachers, and writers, whether they have an institutional affiliation or not. Applicants with college or university affiliations must, however, be nominated by their institutions.

All applicants for Summer Stipends must submit their proposals through Grants.gov, the central federal government portal for all grant applications. What follows is a step-by-step guide for submitting your application through Grants.gov.

Online applications accepted through September 29, 2011. The internal deadline for Augustana College is September 8, 2011 as the college can only nominate two applicants. CUR Pre-ISSOTL Conference Workshop
"International Perspectives on Undergraduate Research and Inquiry: A Scholarly Discussion"

CUR is pleased to announce a partnership with ISSOTL. CUR will once again co-sponsor a pre-conference workshop at ISSOTL2011 entitled: INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES ON UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AND INQUIRY: A SCHOLARLY DISCUSSION. They are interested in posters about undergraduate research and inquiry, focused on the three themes of the symposium:

- Providing undergraduate research opportunities and collaborations across international boundaries
- Building research experiences into first-year and introductory courses
- Transforming curricula to include research and inquiry

Augustana Center for the Study of Ethics
2011-2012 Community Lecture Series

The Augustana Center for the Study of Ethics is pleased to announce the 2011-2012 Community Lecture Series. We bring this to your attention for two reasons: (1) one presentation of each lecture will be scheduled for on-campus; let me know if there is a particular course that you are teaching this year that might interface with one of the lectures, in which case we will schedule it for the term you are teaching the course, and (2) we encourage you to bring the lectures to the attention of groups and organizations of which you might be a part. Each participant agrees to present her or his lecture once on campus and up to three times off campus. The Center for the Study of Ethics pays the presentation stipends so that the lectures can be made available to community groups and organizations without cost.

2011-2012 Faculty Research Forum (FRF) Schedule

The FPF is a friendly, interdisciplinary working group of researchers and writers that meet two times a term to workshop works-in-progress (e.g., book chapters, grant proposals, conference papers, journal articles, book proposals, and other forms of scholarly production). Volunteers submit their work to the group, and then we gather over drinks and snacks to ask questions and provide constructive critiques--all in an effort to improve our research and writing.

In years past, the group has consisted of a good mix of people-from assistant to full professors in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. (People with sabbaticals or pre-tenure paid leaves often find the group especially valuable.) We ask only that members make a commitment to give and to receive feedback on works-in-progress. This typically means that each member presents a draft about once a year and attends the other meetings as regularly as possible.

The times for all meetings are 4:30 - 6:00 PM in the Dahl Room of the College Center. Dates for this year's FRF workshops are:
