This Week's Message
Proud and Glad
This last weekend, I joined Cathy Goebel, Taddy Kalas, Emil Kramer, Tom Bengtson and Dell Jensen at the Association for Core Text and Curriculum annual meeting in New Haven. Sponsored by Yale, with Augustana, Boston College and the College of Holy Cross serving as co-sponsors, faculty in this organization shared insights and pedagogy for using classic texts as common experiences in various curricular structures. Most of the participants have programs similar to ours with common elements in the first year or as a part of honors, but some have course work across the four years or in the senior year.
I was very proud of our colleagues. Under Cathy's leadership, we focused on the winter term art exhibit and accompanying catalogue Liberal Arts through the AGES as a core text. Cathy wonderfully explained the works in the exhibit and provided an introduction to its interdisciplinary qualities. Taddy, Emil, Tom and Dell discussed how they incorporated various works in their courses. The panel and the catalogues that were provided to attendees were very well received.
While I attended some of the panels that others presented, I was somewhat amazed at what I was hearing as side comments. Over and over again, there were remarks such as: "We have to figure out how to assess our program" or "What are you going to do about assessment?" Many of these comments came from faculty at schools that have considerably more resources than do we. At that point, I was glad. For over ten years, we have asked important questions about the learning of our students and gathered information to help us answer those questions. I was glad that I was part of faculty who is open to thinking about how we demonstrate the value of an Augustana education.
