Volume 8, Issue 20 - February 7, 2011

This Week's Message

As you are aware, the college has been involved in a strategic planning exercise since July. I've had the privilege of working with a very talented and creative group of colleagues on the Planning Committee and we've been working hard to put together a framework for a plan that can guide Augustana for the next few years. I am excited to begin sharing the work of the committee with the broader community.

Our process has included the following:

Step 1: Assessed progress on Authentically Augustana

Step 2: Identified "signature" programs/decisions

Step 3: Reexamined risks to the college

Step 4: Identified contemporary risks to the college

Step 5: Developed eight (8) strategic imperatives to respond to the most significant risks (October 2010)

Step 6: Appointed "design teams" to develop tactics to support each strategic imperative (October 2010)

Step 7: Design teams identified strategic initiatives, improvement targets and measures

Step 8: Design teams presented "show and tell" and led discussion of initiatives, improvement targets and measures

Step 8: Preliminary report submitted to President Bahls (December 2010)

We now seek to do the following:

Step 10: Stakeholder discussions (January & February 2011)

Step 11: Develop implementation plans

Step 12: Seek final approval by Board of Trustees (May 2011)

Please see the document and accompanying PowerPoint presentation for the framework of the plan.

I also would like to invite you to attend any of the following sessions to ask questions, provide feedback or learn more about Augustana's direction in the coming years.

Thursday, February 10

Planning Committee/Design Team Representatives will be available in Olin to discuss the framework before and after the faculty meeting.

Friday, February 11

Friday Conversation at 4:00 p.m. will be an addendum "show and tell." This session will be a little bit like speed-dating, in which participants will spend 5 to 7 minutes traveling around the room learning about each of the strategic imperatives.

Tuesday, February 15

I will be available in the Wilson Center from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. to gather feedback about the direction of the plan.

Wednesday, February 16

I will be available in the Wilson Center from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. to gather feedback about the direction of the plan.

I hope you will share our excitement about the strategic direction and the approach of the plan.

Please feel free to stop by my office in Seminary, email me at wkentbarnds@augustana.edu or call me directly at x7662 if you have questions or observations.
