Announcements

Hasselmo Prize for Academic Pursuit

Established by Dr. Nils Hasselmo, Class of 1957, in recognition of the ways in which his Augustana education both informed and transformed his life and vocational calling, this prize funds a yearly award (up to $5,000) to enrich the experience of a student who has demonstrated academic excellence and who expresses an intent to pursue higher education teaching and/or research as a vocation.

This award is intended to be in addition to any financial assistance the student is receiving and not in place of existing student financial assistance. Upon selection, the recipient will be asked to meet with the dean and draft a plan for how prize funding will be used toward the pursuit of higher education teaching and/or research as a vocational goal.  For example, funds from the prize can used to support student research or creative endeavors, attend professional meetings, travel to special collections, laboratories or other resources, or any unique academically rigorous opportunity not typically available.  The prize must be used during the 2011-2012 school year (including summer, 2011).

Nominations for these awards should be made by department chairs.  The chair should discuss the student's academic record and his/her potential for a future academic position in higher education. Preference will be given to applicants who will be seniors in the fall of 2011.   Nominations should be submitted to the Office of Academic Affairs by May 1, 2011.  The dean and associate deans will determine the recipient.  

The selection will be announced at the 2011 Undergraduate Honors Convocation.  The recipient is expected to report on his/her experience at the 2012 Celebration of Learning and submit a one-page written summary to the Office of Advancement by May 1, 2012. 


VOCATION OF A LUTHERAN COLLEGE CONFERENCE
"A Calling to Embrace Civility:
Lutheran Higher Education in the Public Arena"
August 1 - 3, 2011

The 17th annual Vocation of a Lutheran College Conference will convene once again at Augsburg College in Minneapolis from Monday, August 1 - Wednesday, August 3. The conference will begin with dinner at 5:00 PM on August 1 and conclude by 1:30 PM on August 3. The theme of this year's conference is "A Calling to Embrace Civility: Lutheran Higher Education in the Public Arena." We will explore the many ways in which we engage the community and the various public roles we play in light of our vocation in higher education, addressing the perspectives of both administrators and faculty. We will also offer opportunities for participants to orient themselves to the idea of "the vocation of a Lutheran college" if they are new to this ongoing conversation.

The costs of this conference are paid by the ELCA and Augustana for up to five attendees. There is no cost to you.

AUGUSTANA AND WHITEY'S TO CELEBRATE
GUINNESS WORLD RECORD

The Augustana College, Whitey's Ice Cream, Longfellow Liberal Arts Elementary, and the Quad-City community will gather to celebrate the Guinness World Record set for the longest chain of people licking ice cream on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 from 5-7 PM in the Quad near Old Main (rain location Evald Great Hall). World record participants are encouraged to attend. The celebration will include eating Augustana Viking Pride ice cream, signing a world record banner to display throughout the Quad Cities and the opportunity for participants to pose with the record certificate for picture taking.

The college and the Quad-City community came together a year ago to beat the record set in 2009 by 2,500 people in De Valladolid, Spain. Augustana chose to challenge the record with the new Whitey's ice cream flavor, "Augustana Viking Pride," which was created to honor the college's sesquicentennial anniversary. Earlier this month, Guinness World Records informed Augustana College that the 2,694 people who gathered on Ericson Field on April 20, 2010, had officially beaten the record.

"Modern Abortion Narratives and the Century of Silence"

Meg Gillette will discuss her research on representations of abortion in early twentieth-century American literature. While historians of American abortion politics have long declared the era of criminalized abortion (from 1880 to 1973) a "century of silence," a time when "on the public level abortion was rarely discussed," Meg Gillette argues that there was indeed a vigorous public abortion discourse during the early twentieth-century, one that appeared not in the newspapers, medical and court cases of public record, but in the stories, plays, and poems penned by modern writers. A look at how modern literature taught readers about abortion and called them to judge for themselves America's anti-abortion laws, this talk credits modern literature as a significant player in the development of today's abortion politics.

Dr. Johnson is a member of the research team with Augustana's Jennifer Burnham who spend several weeks in northwest Greenland each summer studying bird populations, genetics, and environmental pollution. Dr. Johnson is interested in evolution and conservation biology, especially the adaptive significance of genetic diversity and the effects of increased population fragmentation and isolation. His appearance is funded by Augustana's Institute for Leadership and Service.

Taddy Kalas will discuss bridges between the art and literature of early modern France.

This is the fourth of four lectures by Augustana faculty in April at the Figge Art Museum. The lecture is in conjunction with the Augustana exhibit "Celebrating Ideas: Bridging Communities with Augustana's Liberal Arts Through the AGES."

The Figge cafe and bar will open at 5 p.m. and there will be live music for this "Thursdays at the Figge" event. Admission and the lecture are free to Figge members and Augustana faculty, students and staff; the lecture is free with admission to non-members.

On Thursday, May 12, Academic Affairs will host a reception in the library for Augustana's faculty, students and Board of Trustees. This will be the second opportunity this academic year to update your record of achievements.

The library needs your scholarship published, performed or exhibited from August 31, 2010 through April 1, 2011-including books, journal articles, grants, SoTL articles, music compositions, plays, photos of works of art, papers or presentations at conferences. (Scholarship published, performed or exhibited after April 1 will be included in the next year's celebration.)

The deadline for submissions is Monday, May 2, 2011.

Work previously submitted to the library will be included-you need not send it again.

2011 AUGUSTANA COLLEGE SENIOR STUDIO ART STUDENT EXHIBITION

Eight graduating studio art students will have a portfolio of their work exhibited at the Augustana College Art Museum May 7-21, 2011 (closed for exams May 17-19). Slated to participate are: Anita Cook, Holly Gore, Anny Hasse, Gina Jarrell, Stephanie Sarb, Kelly Spreitzer, Cassie Trent and Audrey Waner. The exhibiting artists will discuss their art in the Augustana College Art Museum during a 50-minute walking tour program on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 10:30 AM. AUGUSTANA EXHIBITION AT FIGGE MUSEUM
March 19 - May 29, 2011

In celebration of Augustana's 150th anniversary, a rich and diverse historical overview of art works from the Augustana College art collection will be exhibited in "Celebrating Ideas: Bridging Communities with Liberal Arts through the AGES" at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport. All Augustana faculty, staff, administration and students are admitted into the museum FREE until the end of May. One hundred works of art from Augustana's Liberal Arts through the AGES collection, ancient through contemporary, are currently on display. Every Thursday night at 7:00 PM during the month of April there will be a talk and tour by an Augustana professor on the collection and the project. Each work of art is exhibited with a panel written by an Augustana student or member of the faculty/administration. Catalogs are provided free of charge until the supply runs out. The Council on Undergraduate Research hosts a Registry of Undergraduate Researchers. The Registry is open to students and graduate schools in the fields of Anthropology/Archaeology, Arts/Humanities, Biology/Biochemistry, Business, Chemistry/Biochemistry, Economics, Education, Engineering, English and Linguistics, Environmental Studies, Geosciences, Health Professions, History, Journalism and Communications, Mathematics/Computer Science, Physics/ Astronomy, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work and Sociology.

Any undergraduate may go to https://www.cur.org/ugreg/reg1.asp to fill out a simple curriculum vitae form. There is no charge to the student or the student's institution and records will be made available to bona fide Graduate Schools that contract with CUR for this service.
