During spring break, Rachel Schuldt (senior music cello performance major) entered the St. Louis SAI (Sigma Alpha Iota--a professional music women's sorority) alumnae chapter's scholarship competition and was one of the top winners. The money she has been awarded will be used to further her education in graduate school.

A One-Day Conference on Sharing Evidence of Student Learning

What do you do in your classes that promotes student learning? What practices have you integrated into your teaching and how do you know they are working? What evidence do you have that students are learning?
Augustana is hosting a one-day conference designed for college instructors in our area to share what is happening in their classrooms. It is an opportunity to meet with others interested in teaching and learning, and discuss what we do and how we evaluate our effectiveness. Plans for the day include a keynote speaker and several concurrent sessions. Registration will be approximately $50 per participant and will include snacks and lunch. A more detailed program and registration information will be sent in mid-March.
You are invited to present your work at this conference. For example, you might discuss a department initiative, a course that you developed, a class assignment that you tried, an evaluation strategy that you used, or a special learning opportunity that you offered. CALL FOR SABBTICAL LEAVE GRANTS AND SUMMER RESEARCH STIPENDS
The Faculty Research Committee seeks proposals for Sabbatical Leave Grants and Summer Research Stipends. Fundable items include faculty salary replacement (for Sabbatical Leave Grants), student salaries, special equipment, supplies, journal page costs, work in major archives, and additional study.
Proposals are due March 14, 2011 by 5:00 PM to Mary Koski in Academic Affairs. Please refer to the "Grants" page for more information, or contact any of the committee members: Jamie Nelson, Margaret Morse, David Arbesú, Jim van Howe, Patricia Shea, Ian Harrington.
Celebration of Faculty Scholarship and Teaching

On Thursday, May 12, academic affairs will host a late-afternoon reception in the library for Augustana's faculty and board of trustees. This will be the second opportunity this academic year to update your record of achievements.
The library needs your scholarship published, performed or exhibited from August 31, 2010 through April 1, 2011-including books, journal articles, grants, SoTL articles, music compositions, plays, photos of works of art, papers or presentations at conferences. (Scholarship published, performed or exhibited after April 1 will be included in the next year's celebration.)
The deadline for submissions is Monday, May 2, 2011.
Work previously submitted to the library will be included-you need not send it again.
Rita Griffin, Library Secretary, x7266, or Carla Tracy will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

MIDWEST FACULTY SEMINAR
"Energy"
April 7-9, 2011
This seminar will consider the material aspects of the energy problem alongside ethical questions and historical overviews. What will new energy sources look like and how will they be allocated? What by-products and long-term environmental consequences will result from these new technologies? As materials grow scarce, should some people or purposes be considered more worthy of resources than others? How does one prioritize energy usage across borders? We will consider the economic and political stakes of energy policy, and consider how an issue that affects the whole earth can or should be managed by national governments and international corporations.
This seminar will include talks by Heidi Levin (University of Chicago Energy Initiative) with Robert Rosner (Astronomy and Astrophysics), Travis Bradford (Business Management), David Archer (Geophysical Sciences) and Elizabeth Moyer (Geophysical Sciences).

The College's membership covers some registration and housing costs for the seminar for up to two faculty. If approved by the Dean, complete the registration form, save it as "MFS.Energy" and attach it to an email to mfs@college.uchicago.edu by noon on March 31, 2011.
