Augustana's 150th Anniversary Hometown Celebration

The college held its first class on September 1, 1860 in Chicago.  In an expression of gratitude to Rock Island, the college's hometown of 135 years, a special celebration will be held at Schwiebert Riverfront Park, featuring an ice cream social, performances by college music ensembles, remarks by President Steve Bahls, Congressman Phil Hare and other local dignitaries, Viking Pride ice cream, poetry reading and fireworks.  Hope to see you there!

Faculty members Ann Boaden, Paul Olsen, Darrin Good, Wendy Hilton-Morrow and Jennifer Burnham will share their Augustana experiences in celebration of the college's 150th anniversary.  Learn what they view as the influences that shaped their education at Augustana and how that has shaped their current career choices.  Kai Swanson will moderate this sesquicentennial event.

Kristin Douglas presents "Augustana Committee Structure: Recommendations from the Committee on Committees"

At a faculty forum in March 2009, an ad hoc committee, the Committee on Committees (C2), was formed by faculty vote. The charge of C2's members was to study our committee structure and then make recommendations for reducing the number of unnecessary committees and increasing the effectiveness of the remaining committees. In this Friday Conversation, the members of C2 will report their recommendations, as well as begin a discussion on Augustana's division structure.

Amanda Baugous presents "From Pilot to Passage: Mapping the Next Steps for the IDEA Center SRI"

This past spring 25 faculty members piloted a new Student Rating of Instructor instrument provided by the IDEA Center, a non-profit organization serving higher ed. Please join the SRSC & SRI pilot participants Friday, Sept. 10 as we discuss the experience and possible next steps. We plan to hold an open conversation on the strengths and weaknesses of the new instrument and how it supports Augustana's emphasis on teaching, learning, and faculty development. We also hope to generate discussion on the most effective way to present information about the measure to all relevant constituents, as well as the most appropriate way to move an adoption proposal forward.

Food Reads!

In conjunction with this year's Augie Reads book Bottlemania and the theme of sustainability, the library is hosting "Food Reads," a reading/discussion (read "fun" here) group dedicated to food. We will meet twice each term in weeks 3 and 7 on Tuesdays at 4:00 p.m. in Tredway 518. Please join us for food talk and eating (appropriate refreshments will be served). The essays and selections from the books are available on Moodle under Library/Food Reads. Here is the schedule:

New Exhibit in Special Collections

This fall's Special Collections exhibit is "The Party Days: Snapshots of Student Life in Anniversary Years."  September 1, 2010 marks the 150th anniversary of the first day of classes at Augustana College.  As part of the celebration of Augustana's Sesquicentennial, this exhibit shows what life would have been like for students starting their first year at Augustana during four important years in the college's history: 1860, 1910, 1960, and 2010.  The exhibit presents snapshots of various aspects of student life: tuition costs, class statistics, clubs and sports, library resources, and graduation requirements. 

The exhibit was curated by Natalie Markovich '11 with research assistance by Amanda Wellhouse '12.


Faculty Research Forum (FRF)

The Faculty Research Forum is an interdisciplinary working group of researchers and writers that gathers approximately once a month to workshop works-in-progress. Volunteers submit their work to the group, and then we gather over drinks and snacks to ask questions and provide constructive critiques--all in an effort to improve our research and writing.

The dates for this year's Faculty Research Forum workshops are from 4:30-6:00 PM in the Dahl Room of the College Center on the following dates: September 16, October 28, December 2, January 20, March 17, and April 21.

If you are interested in being part of this group, or wish to learn more, please email Meg Gillette or Margaret Morse with: (1) your name; (2) discipline; (3) brief description of a project you are working on this year; and (4) the FRF date that the project would be ready for review (not necessarily completed):  9/16, 10/7, 12/2, 1/20, 3/17, or 4/21.


Celebrations of Augustana's Sesquicentennial continue this fall

The 150th website (www.augustana.edu/150) will continue to feature weekly stories on Augustana history, "This Week in the Observer," showing what was happening on campus in years past, and "Today in Augustana History."  This week features a story on whether Augustana College was the first college in the United States to use letter grades; check the site throughout the fall for stories on early science at Augustana, the Augustana Prohibition League, the 1918 influenza epidemic at Augustana, and much more.  In addition to the website, the library will be sponsoring a scavenger hunt for students beginning in week 7, and the second floor of the library and Special Collections will feature exhibits related to the sesquicentennial.
