Reception in Honor of New Exhibition in Special Collections
200 Years Ago: A Celebration of 1809 (Beyond Lincoln and Darwin)

Special Collections will host a reception on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 4:00 PM. The reception is in honor of their new exhibition: "200 Years Ago: A Celebration of1809 (Beyond Lincoln and Darwin)." The exhibition includes an early story by Edgar Allen Poe, Alfred, Lord Tennyson's In Memoriam, and a 1776 edition of Common Sense. Highlights from our collection will also be on display.
Please stop by anytime between 4:00 and 5:00 as your schedule permits. Birthday cake (in honor of all those celebrating 200th birthdays), coffee, tea, and lemonade will be served. Bringyour party hats!
Attention instructors and advisers of first year students:
Please encourage your first-year students to take the Research Practices Survey in the next few weeks! The RPS was developed by Carleton College and other liberal arts colleges for the Higher Education Data Sharing (HEDS) consortium to measure research skills, and it will allow us to compare our results to those of similar institutions. First-year students will get an email asking for their participation in the survey, which will be active until September 18th. It will be administered during the fall and spring of the first year and then again in the senior year.
Students who complete the survey should print out the last "thank you" page, write their name on it and bring it to the library circulation desk on 2nd floor. A drawing will take place from those pages for two $50 dollar gift certificates to the college bookstore. All of this will be spelled out when students receive the survey.

The River Readings at Augustana
Augustana College announces its third annual literary reading series, The River Readings at Augustana. The series this year hosts six diverse and outstanding writers. As has become traditional, the series begins with a writer associated with Augustana, and this year we are proud to present poet Rebecca Wee on September 10. Other writers on the roster are James Galvin, poet, novelist and prose writer, on October 1; poets Nick Twemlow and Robyn Schiff on January 21 who are both editors at the publishing venture Canarium Books; poet, fiction writer, and memoirist Richard Katrovas on February 4, who founded the Prague Summer Program; Chris Offutt on March 18, fiction and memoir, selected by Granta as one of the Twenty Best Young Writers in the U.S.; and novelist Daniel Woodrell on April 15, who writes in the vernacular of the Ozark region. All readings are free and open to the public and held in Wallenberg Hall at 7:00 p.m. on Thursdays. All of the writers visit classes and other groups of students; contact Kelly Daniels or Margi Rogal if you wish to book a writer.
Faculty Retreat Survey Feedback
Thank you to everyone who responded to the Faculty Retreat survey!
"Make time for more than one break-out session" was among the most common responses to the question about improving the retreat for next year. There was a great deal of interest in hearing more about topics such as service learning, re-reading strategies, international study, and extending learning beyond the 10-week term. The Academic Affairs Office will be working with ACTL to coordinate further conversations about these and other topics for the rest of this year.
Some of us were left with questions about keeping student records after the presentation on legal matters. In the next week or so, Sarah Johnson will be following up with some recommendations for us to help clarify this issue.

MLA 2009 Update
Attention, faculty! The Modern Language Association (MLA) has revised the way that sources are cited with several key distinctions from its earlier format. These changes officially took effect in April 2009. The latest version of A Writer's Reference by Diana Hacker includes these changes, but for an introduction to the new citation style and a look at some specific examples, please view this brief slideshow, created by Reference Librarian Amanda Makula.
SAVE THE DATE-ACI SYMPOSIUM "RESTORING TRUST IN GOVERNMENT"
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, AT ELMHURST COLLEGE
Reports of unethical conduct have led to a good deal of public cynicism about government, resulting in erosion of trust in government. Rather than dwell on what has gone wrong, however, a symposium led by Augustana faculty member Dan Lee and sponsored by the Associated Colleges of Illinois (ACI), will focus attention on what might be done to restore trust in government. The symposium will be held Saturday, September 19, at Elmhurst College.
Former Rock Island Mayor and Augie alum, Mark Schwiebert will be the keynote speaker. Other confirmed speakers include Mark Boozell, who served as Jim Edgar's chief of staff and is now a government policy advisor with Dykema in Chicago, and Jim Nowlan, a former state legislator who is a senior fellow with the University of Illinois Institute of Government and Public Affairs and adjunct professor of public policy at Knox College. They will be joined on the panel by faculty from ACI member institutions.
Each ACI member institution is invited to send an eight-person delegation comprised of four students, two faculty members and two alumni. The event will not be open to the general public. Registration for the event will be $20, which will cover conference materials and lunch. The program can be found here.

MidStates Consortium for Math and Science (MCMS) Announces Upcoming Events for this Fall:
The MidStates Consortium and the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) will be co-hosting a workshop entitled Women and the Academy: Defining our Roles and Shaping our Communities. The meeting will be held at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA.

The ACM and the MCMS will co-host this meeting at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA September 25-27, 2009. ACM and MCMS campuses continue to add women to their faculties and on many campuses, nearly 50% of the professors are women. It is exciting to see women securing tenure-track positions, demonstrating excellence as teachers and scholars, receiving grants and awards, earning tenure and promotion and making major contributions to their departments, colleges, and broader scholarly communities. However, women faculty still face particular obstacles. Women report working longer on class preparation including lectures and labs in order to avoid confrontations with students who directly challenge their authority about grading, assignments and workload. During committee work, women sometimes perceive their abilities, experiences and knowledge are not as highly valued as those of their male colleagues.
The ACM Committee on the Status of Women and the leadership of the MCMS would like to invite women faculty to come spend a weekend considering these issues including practical solutions, strategies and best practices that may help women address these challenges. We are hoping that through this meeting and further conversations, women professors who feel isolated and marginalized will be supported and encouraged by other women faculty who are also feeling similar challenges, but have found ways to successfully navigate these obstacles and capitalize on the opportunities that allow them to flourish.
