ACTL

Greetings from the Center for Teaching & Learning.

I wanted to take one more opportunity to encourage you to participate in (some or all of) a day-long series of workshops that will be held on Thursday, February 4th (week 9 of winter term). The CVR, ACTL and Academic Affairs will be hosting Dr. Marion Fass of Beloit College, a representative of SENCER: Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities. Initiated in 2001,

"SENCER has established and supported an ever-growing community of faculty, students, academic leaders, and others to improve undergraduate ... education by connecting learning to critical civic questions.

Our goals are to: (1) get more students interested and engaged in learning in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) courses, (2) help students connect STEM learning to their other studies, and (3) strengthen students' understanding of science and their capacity for responsible work and citizenship."[1]

During the day, we will be exploring the full spectrum from civic engagement modules that can be incorporated into a wide variety of classrooms to designing full-fledged service learning projects that are a major component of a course. Our goal is to help you envision possibilities as well as to enable you to move your initiatives forward.

In order for us to plan for adequate resources (including lunch!) for all participants, and to reserve your spot, please be sure to complete the following survey if you haven't already: http://www.isalient.com/app/index.php?survey_code=75427f1f&login=1

If you have any questions about the day's events, please don't hesitate to contact me, Becca Poock in the CVR or Dell Jensen in the Chemistry department.

In the meantime, have a productive week seven.

Jon Clauss
Augustana Center for Teaching & Learning
