Fifth Annual Honors Convocation

This ceremony recognizes academic honors for the first-year, sophomore, junior and senior classes, special department awards, Phi Beta Kappa members, and Jaeke Award recipients, as well as other area awards.
You are not required to participate in the procession but are invited to if you wish. If you plan to participate, please notify Doug Nelson so your name can be added to the marching order list. The procession will form up in the Ensemble Room, Bergendoff Hall, between 10:00 and 10:15 AM.
Faculty Research Forum
The last installment of the Faculty Research Forum: Thursday, May 14, 4:30 to 6 PM, Dahl Room of the Campus Center. Please join this interdisciplinary faculty group as we discuss writings-in-progress by Randall Hall (music) , Umme Al-Wazedi (English) and Molly Todd (history). All members of the faculty are invited to come. To receive copies of the articles that we will be discussing in advance, please email Jason Mahn or Molly Todd.
2009-2010 Community Lecture Series
The Board of Directors of the Augustana Center for the Study of Ethics invites you to submit a proposal for the 2009-2010 Community Lecture Series. Proposals may address any ethical issue related to any area of academic inquiry. Lectures should be suitable for presentation to a general audience. Proposals should be submitted to Heidi Storl (firstname.lastname@example.org) by Monday June 1, 2009.
Funded by the Augustana Center for the Study of Ethics as a way of expressing appreciation for the support the College receives from the community, the Community Lecture Series is made available without charge to area schools, churches, libraries, civic groups and other community organizations. Each participant must agree to present her or his lecture up to four times to different groups and organizations. Each participant does her or his own scheduling. One of the four presentations will be on campus during the 2009-2010 academic year.
The Center's Board of Directors will make the selection decisions from among the proposals submitted. Those selected will receive a stipend of $200 for the preparation of the lecture, which will be paid at the end of the summer, and $50 per presentation for up to four presentations, which will be paid at the end of spring term next year.

The ELCA Wittenberg Center works with one of its Church partners, the EKD, the Evangelical Church of Germany, to award two scholarships for three months of study in Germany. We are currently looking for ELCA students/pastors/church workers who would be interested in applying for study in 2010. The deadline to submit applications in September 15, 2009. NEH Summer Institute
The summer Institute is entitled, "A Fierce Green Fire at 100:" Aldo Leopold and the Roots of Enviornmental Ethics." It is sponsored by the Arizona State University Institute for Humanities Research and is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. It will be held in Prescott, Arizona June 22 - July 17, 2009. T2enth five professors will discuss numerous aspects of the legacy of Aldo Leopold, author of the environmental classic A Sand County Almanac. The website is at http://ihr.asu.edu/Leopold/
Call for 2009-2010 Celebration of Faculty Scholarship and Teaching
The library needs your scholarship published or performed through August 30, 2009-including books, journal articles, grants, SoTL articles, music compositions, plays, photos of works of art, papers or presentations at conferences. (Scholarship published or performed after August 30 will be included in the next year's celebration.)
We also need narratives about your teaching innovations. The topic for the Fall, 2009, celebration will be "Responding to Student Writing." Faculty are invited to submit narratives on approaches to this topic. (e.g., In what ways do you respond to student writing? How do you phrase critical remarks so as not to discourage? Do you use an effective grading rubric to respond to student writing? What is a timely response to student writing assignments?)
