2018 Eddy Mabry Diversity Award winners

Essays about the disconnect between white Christians and the struggles of marginalized people, and prejudiced standards of beauty, won the 2018 Eddy Mabry Diversity Award.

The Eddy Mabry Diversity Award recognizes academic work by students who have demonstrated a significant commitment to enhancing multicultural awareness at Augustana.

First prize: Hannah Kathleen Griggs, "Toward a Theology of Transformation." Griggs is a senior from Bettendorf, Iowa, majoring in religion.

Second prize: Karen Ruiz, "Feminist Critique on Toni Morrison's 'The Bluest Eye.'" Ruiz is a first-year student from Chicago.

The late Dr. Eddie Mabry taught in the Religion Department at Augustana from 1990 to 2002; this annual award was established in honor of his academic and community service, and especially in recognition of his lifelong contributions to diversity and multicultural awareness. 

Submissions included works that explore issues related to diversity and multiculturalism such as social class, culture, race/ethnicity, sex/gender, sexuality, disability and religion.
